Russia probes pilot error after plane blaze

MOSCOW (AFP-Jiji) โ€” Russian investigators were on Tuesday considering pilot error as the cause of a crash-landing that saw a plane erupt in flames at Moscowโ€™s busiest airport and kill 41 people, media reported.

The first fire engine arrived at the scene only two minutes after the plane landed and burst into flames, the airport said Tuesday.

Russian television channel Ren TV posted what it said was the conversation between the pilots and air traffic control which showed that the pilot remained calm as he requested an emergency landing and did not assess the situation as critical.

The Sukhoi Superjet-100 had just flown out of Sheremetyevo Airport on Sunday evening when it sent out an emergency signal and circled back, bounced on the runway and caught fire.

Sources in the investigation told Kommersant newspaper the Aeroflot pilots made a number of errors including flying into a thunderstorm and landing with a full tank rather than circling to use up fuel.

Various sources told the business daily RBK the pilots opened a cockpit window, potentially fanning the flames, and failed to turn off engines immediately after landing.

Investigators are still examining the black boxes from the plane and have so far given no official reason for the crash.

GM, union reach deal to rescue part of Ontario plant: source

(Reuters) - General Motors and the largest union representing Canadaโ€™s auto workers have reached a deal to partly rescue an auto plant in Ontario slated to close this year by converting it to a parts-stamping facility, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The plan would help save some union jobs at GMโ€™s Oshawa car-making plant, even though the operations would be scaled down and it will no longer produce cars, the source added.

โ€œOshawa stays open,โ€ said the source who spoke on the condition of anonymity. โ€œItโ€™s a small foot in the door, but it stays open.โ€

A spokesman for GM declined to comment before an 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) press conference at which the company and the union are expected to make an announcement about the plant. A Unifor spokeswoman also declined comment before the press conference.

GM, which has been increasing its footprint in connected-car development in Canada, will also make an announcement on advanced automotive technologies, the source said.

CBC cited a brochure given to members of Unifor that outlined the plans for employees of the GM plant in Oshawa. In November, GM announced plans to close the plant by the end of 2019, affecting almost 2,600 workers.

Unifor said the closure was contrary to a contract that stipulates there would be no plant closures prior to Sept. 21, 2020.
