Space could be expanding because our 3D observation of reality is actually the holographic projection of the 2D surface of a torus-shaped universe, and as the torus "rolls" into itself (say from the top, pic related), the lower hemisphere surface is stretching, which if that's where our local group is located, would appear to us to be expanding space. Traversing the equator of the torus would then initiate a perceived contraction of space.
