Was reading "The Fourth Turning" by Strauss and Howe and on page 48 it mentions an American era known as "The Great Awakening" which spanned from 1727 to 1746 with its peak ~1741. It began in the Connecticut Valley and was spearheaded by Jonathan Edwards and was also championed by English-born evangelist George Whitefield. It was marked by the schism of faith and works. This ended the time of class distinctions and social solidarity and led to the notion that Americans were a classless, homogeneous, society.
Might be worth looking into because it seems to parallel our own "Great Awakening" and its focus on the battle between good and evil.
