Trump unveils new nickname for Biden

President Trump unveiled a new nickname for his potential Democratic rival Joe Biden. In a tweet Friday, Trump predicted the 2020 Democratic nomination would come down to “SleepyCreepy Joe” against “Crazy Bernie” Sanders. “Everyone else is fading fast!” Trump wrote of the more than 20 Democratic presidential candidates in the race.

Trump has previously referred to the former vice president as “Sleepy Joe,” but Friday he referenced Biden’s unwanted touching. Eight women have publicly accused Biden of touching them without their permission.

In April, citing the economy, Trump appeared confident in facing either Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, or Biden. “I look forward to facing whoever it may be. May God Rest Their Soul!” he tweeted. I believe it will be Crazy Bernie Sanders vs. Sleepy Joe Biden as the two finalists to run against maybe the best Economy in the history of our Country (and MANY other great things)! I look forward to facing whoever it may be. May God Rest Their Soul!

James Comey: Rod Rosenstein doesn’t have ‘sterling character, strong character’

Former FBI Director James Comey took a swipe at former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for not having “strong character.” “I think people like that, like Rod Rosenstein, who are people of accomplishment but not real sterling character, strong character, find themselves trapped. And then they start telling themselves a story to justify their being trapped which is, 'Yeah, he's awful but the country needs me,’” Comey, who was fired by Trump from the FBI in May 2017, said in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper Thursday evening. “Republicans are doing this in Congress. ‘Yeah, it's awful, but if I speak I'll get defeated and this nation needs me here right now.’ So they start to make little compromises to stay on the team. Talk about collusion, saying that's what I need to do to survive and in the process, he has eaten their soul, they’re lost. So that's what happens to so many people,” Comey said.

The remarks were made in response to Cooper questioning Comey about an op-ed he wrote this month titled “How Trump Co-Opts Leaders Like Bill Barr,” a reference to Attorney General William Barr. In the op-ed, he argued that “Trump eats your soul in small bites.” He claimed that those “lacking inner strength” succumb to Trump and make “compromises.” In contrast, he praised the character of former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, who resigned on principle in December in part due to a disagreement over the Trump administration’s announcement that all troops would be withdrawn from Syria.

Earlier Thursday, a farewell ceremony was held for Rosenstein at the Justice Department. Rosenstein oversaw special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation while he was at the Justice Department after former Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself. His oversight continued until November 2018, when Matthew Whitaker was named acting attorney general.

Vice President Mike Pence on Friday renewed his call for Democratic leadership to strip freshman lawmaker Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., of her seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Ilhan Omar has made statements … anti-semetic comments … Statements against our most cherished ally: Israel … that ought to be rejected by every American,” Pence said during an interview with “Fox and Friends.” “And frankly the fact that very recently she has been trying to blame the United States of America for the deprivation and poverty brought on by the dictatorship in Venezuela.”

Omar first drew the ire of Republicans on Capitol Hill and political allies of President Trump’s administration when she tweeted her disdain for a pro-Israel influence in Congress. She later apologized for those remarks, which sparked a resolution from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., condemning “hate in all forms” — though it did not mention Omar by name.

More recently, Omar blamed U.S. policy toward Venezuela for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in that country, telling left-leaning news organization Democracy Now : “A lot of the policies that we have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela. And we’ve sort of set the stage for where we’re arriving today.” Omar was elected to Congress as part of the so-called blue wave last November that placed a historic amount of women and women of color in the House of Representatives — giving Democrats the majority back in that chamber. Along with freshmen allies like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Omar’s progressive stances on the economy, social issues, and foreign policy have given Trump and his allies fodder for the 2020 election cycle.

President Trump himself has shown little restraint in blasting Omar and her fiery rhetoric, saying on several occasions she “has a way about her” that is “very unpatriotic.”

Speaking at an event in Minnesota this week, Pence alluded to Omar’s comments costing her the seat she holds in Congress. “The people of Minnesota will decide whether or not she remains in Congress,” Pence said. “Congresswoman Omar has no place on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Democratic leadership out to remove her.”

Alexander Downer Defends FBI Tipoff That Sparked Trump-Russia Probe

Calling himself a “warrior for the Western alliance,” former Australian diplomat Alexander Downer defended sending in the tip that sparked the FBI’s investigation of then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign. In his most extensive interview on the topic to date, Downer gave his version of a conversation he had with Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos in London in May 2016 that would serve as the catalyst for the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe. Downer, who served as Australia’s top diplomat to the U.K. at the time, provided a memo he wrote following the meeting to the FBI more than two months later. According to Downer, Papadopoulos mentioned that Russia might have information on then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton that they could release before the 2016 election.

Downer disputed claims that the ex-diplomat was part of a conspiracy to entrap the campaign adviser. “I don’t know why he told me this, but he did, and we reported it. And the rest is history,” Downer said in an interview on Sky News. “There’s no defense for him saying it’s some sort of weird conspiracy. I mean, it’s what he told me.” “I have no idea why he was blabbering this, but if you say that sort of thing to somebody who is part of the Five Eyes intelligence community, I mean I would regard myself as a warrior for the Western alliance,” said Downer, who is now out of government. Five Eyes refers to an intelligence-sharing agreement between the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

While Downer was critical of Papadopoulos, he said that there was no indication from his May 2016 conversation that the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia to steal or release any Clinton information. “There was no suggestion from Papadopoulos nor in the record of the meeting that we sent back to Canberra, there was no suggestion that there was collusion between Donald Trump or Donald Trump’s campaign and the Russians,” Downer said. “All we did is report what Papadopoulos said, and that was that he thought that the Russians may release information, might release information, that could be damaging to Hillary Clinton’s campaign at some stage before the election.”

Republicans have questioned whether the Papadopoulos tip was sufficient to merit a full-fledged FBI investigation. Papadopoulos was never charged with any conspiracy involving Russia. There is also no evidence that he saw, handled or disseminated any Clinton emails. He did plead guilty on Oct. 5, 2017 to making false statements about his interactions with Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese professor. Papadopoulos claims that on April 26, 2016, Mifsud told him during a meeting in London that the Russian government had “dirt” on Clinton in the form of “thousands” of her emails. Papadopoulos has denied telling anyone on the Trump campaign about Mifsud’s remarks. He has also said he has no recollection of sharing the information from Mifsud with Downer. Papadopoulos met with Downer and another Australian diplomat, Erika Thompson, at the Kensington Wine Room in London on May 10, 2016.

Papadopoulos, who lived in London at the time, had met Thompson several weeks earlier. He’s said that Thompson contacted him to set up the meeting with Downer. Downer said in the interview that he had no expectation that Papadopoulos would bring up Russia’s election-related activities. “Now, he didn’t have to tell me that,” Downer said. “I didn’t go to the meeting thinking he was even going to mention Russia in the context of the election campaign. I had no idea what he would say.”

Papadopoulos has speculated that Mifsud and Downer were working with Western intelligence agencies when they met with him. Though the special counsel portrayed Mifsud as having Russian ties, the mystery professor also had close links to Western diplomats and intelligence agencies. Papadopoulos was contacted by one known FBI informant, Stefan Halper, in September 2016. Halper offered Papadopoulos $3,000 and a trip to London to write a paper on Mediterranean energy security issues. Halper was accompanied on the mission by a government investigator who worked under the alias Azra Turk. Papadopoulos has said that Halper and Turk asked him whether he knew whether the Trump campaign and Russia were working together to release emails, but he said he did not.
