As far as the mechanism that makes hypnosis work, I think it primarily relies on subconscious suggestion. The way magicians use misdirection to divert attention away from what their really doing, they can show you a deck of cards, and while you're focused on that they steal your watch.

Predictive programming on TV is the same, through subconscious injection of ideas and beliefs they can indoctrinate viewers to accept the worldview that they want to present, while you're focused on the overt Context of the story, your brain absorbs the hidden Subtext unconsciously.

The way to guard against this type of manipulation is we all must cultivate Critical Thinking, and not view media Passively. We need to always be Critical of what we're looking at and hearing when we view Entertainment/ News Propaganda. When you learn their methods of manipulation, the pervasiveness of subliminal and encoded messaging is widespread. They want you to relinquish your autonomy in all things, psychically and physically- being conscious of their intentions is the first step to resisting.
