Is America Ready for John Bolton’s War With Iran?

Recently dispatched B-52s and ships are an act of theatrical bravado that ignore the real threat.

National Security Advisor John Bolton’s announcement this week that the U.S. is deploying a carrier strike group and a bomber task force to the U.S. Central Command region seemed perfectly framed to put America on a war footing with Iran. And it is.

Claiming that the decision was made in response to “a number of troubling and escalatory indications and warnings,” Bolton declared that “the United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime.” But, he added, “we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces.”

It took the Defense Department a full day to respond to Bolton’s statement, with acting Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan finally tweeting that the “announced deployment of the @CVN_72 and a @USAirForce bomber task force to the @CENTCOM area of responsibility…represents a prudent repositioning of assets in response to indications of a credible threat by Iranian regime forces.”

Shanahan followed with another tweet: “We call on the Iranian regime to cease all provocation. We will hold the Iranian regime accountable for any attack on US forces or our interests.”

The USS Abraham Lincoln battle group had deployed a month ago from its Norfolk, Virginia, home port and was recently engaged in maneuvers in the Mediterranean Sea. The Pentagon acknowledged that the Abraham Lincoln was scheduled to support CENTCOM during its deployment, but that its arrival was being “accelerated” due to intelligence indicating an imminent Iranian threat.

The fact that Bolton chose to repurpose routine deployments of U.S. military forces into the Middle East as an emergency response to an unspecified threat from Iran is in and of itself a curiosity. Bolton is an advisor to the president, a non-statutory (i.e., not confirmed by the Senate) member of the White House staff who is not in the military chain of command and lacks any command authority.

While Shanahan followed up indicating that the orders for the deployments had been authorized by him the day of Bolton’s announcement, this simply isn’t the case—they were authorized well prior to Bolton’s statement. The fact that the White House announced the deployment of U.S. military forces in response to allegations of an emerging threat in the Middle East, as opposed to by the Pentagon, reflects the political and operational roots of the current crisis.

FBI Used Suitcase Stuffed With Cash During Papadopoulos Sting

Washington power couple Joe diGenova and Victoria Toensing appeared on Sebastian Gorka’s Salem Radio talk show “America First” Thursday, to talk about what they called a blatant FBI sting operation against former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos.

During the show, Toensing, an attorney who partners with her husband at the Washington DC law firm diGenova & Toensing, accused the FBI of trying to frame Papadopoulos with a suitcase full of cash in the summer of 2017.

According to Toensing, Papa-D was vacationing with his then-fiance, Simona Mangiante, in Greece when he was approached by someone who was supposedly impressed with his credentials, and said he wanted to do business with him. The individual allegedly talked the then-29-year-old into traveling to Israel to make a deal, and invited him to his hotel room.

“And there on the bed, is $10,000 in cash in a suitcase,” she continued. Papadopoulos took the money and gave it to his lawyer, who has it still.

Toensing said when Papadopoulos returned to the United States, he was greeted by FBI agents at Dulles Airport and they started searching through everything that he had “the second he landed.”

She added, “in fact, they already had his baggage from the plane. He couldn’t believe they had his baggage.”

US Secretary of State Pompeo to meet Russia’s President Putin & Foreign Minister Lavrov on May 14

Mike Pompeo is to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov when he travels to Russia next week, the US State Department said in a statement.

The visit comes as the relations between Moscow and Washington are at a new low over accusations of Russian meddling in US elections, disagreements over approaches to Venezuela and Iran’s nuclear program as well as US ditching Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty followed up by Russia suspending its participation.

The State Department says they will discuss “the full range of bilateral and multilateral challenges” during a meeting in the southern city of Sochi on May 14.

Pompeo met Lavrov in Finland earlier this week at the Arctic summit.

“We then saw 500 MPs vote for Article 50 which said we leave on the 29th of March, with or without a withdrawal agreement.”

Adding that, “the reason we didn’t leave on March 29th is these people don’t want us to become an independent, self-governing nation. They’re doing their utmost to thwart Brexit.”

The Brexit Party leader went on to say that “they’re basically trying to make us associate members of the European Union”.

Mr Farage went on to accuse the two main establishment political parties of trying to “save their own skins.”

“We have a Labour and Conservative Party negotiating a permanent customs union in alignment with Single Market rules,” the Brexiteer said, before concluding that this was “in many ways even worse than starting a member of the European Union.”

Mr Farage has previously criticised the political establishment, describing politics in Britain as “broken” and “out of touch” and calling for a “peaceful revolution to win back the ability of our nation to be democratic”.

At a rally in Flyde last week Mr Farage said, “Here in the country that has had a continuous parliament since the thirteenth century… in the country that has the mother of parliaments, it is in our very country that the very democratic process has been wilfully betrayed by a political class that has acted — in my view — in the most disgraceful, almost treacherous manner.”

13,000 People Are Waiting At Mexican Border To Claim Asylum

Thousands of foreign nationals are waiting south of the U.S.-Mexico border to claim asylum.

The backlog is a direct result of the Trump administration’s efforts to clamp down on burgeoning asylum claims.

Approximately 13,000 people are on waiting lists to claim asylum in the U.S., an Associated Press investigation found. The AP determined the amount after traveling to eight Mexican cities dotted along the border. Tijuana, the city with the longest line, had 4,800 people on the wait list. Ciudad Juarez and Nogales were two other cities with major lines, with 4,500 and 1,000 people, respectively, waiting to get into the U.S.

The backlog is a consequence of the U.S. government controlling how many people can claim asylum a day, a process known as “metering.”

Each day at ports of entry, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers communicate with their Mexican counterparts, telling them how many immigrants are allowed to cross the border. Officials who handle the massive wait lists then direct the chosen individuals to cross the border to make their asylum claims.

The metering process — which has sparked intense ire from progressive and Democratic circles — has allowed the U.S. government to somewhat manage the massive numbers of immigrants applying for asylum. In a major win for President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that he has the authority to send asylum applicants to Mexico as they wait for their claims to be adjudicated.

The White House has moved forward with a number of other directives aimed at curbing the onslaught asylum claims.

Border Patrol will soon undergo training to conduct on-the-spot asylum interviews themselves, giving relief to immigration courts and expediting the process for those who would otherwise be deported. Asylum screeners have been ordered to get tougher and more skeptical with applicants as they seek to weed out fraud.

In one of its latest bids to deter asylum seekers, the Trump administration is seeking to charge immigrants for lodging asylum claims and require immigration courts to settle cases within 180 days.

A ship that was set to carry arms to Saudi Arabia has apparently left France without them, a day after a protest at port. Activists rallied to stop the delivery, saying the weapons could be used to slaughter civilians in Yemen.

The Bahri-Yanbu, a cargo ship that was meant to deliver the latest shipment of French weapons to the Gulf kingdom arrived in the port Le Havre on Thursday. Protesters gathered there to denounce their government’s refusal to stop arms trade with Saudi Arabia after reports revealed that French weapons have been used by Riyadh in its four-year-long military campaign in neighboring Yemen.

Why do we continue to feed countries that have a disrespectful international behavior and why do we continue to fuel the war? The question should be put to the President of the Republic,” said National Assembly member Jean-Yves Lecoq, who took part in the protest.

On Friday, the ship left the French coast and set sail to Spain without loading arms at Le Havre, Reuters reported citing local officials and ship tracking data. This apparently gives at least a temporary win for the protesters.

Manufactured Iranian Threat in the Persian Gulf

National Security Adviser John Bolton released a statement on May 5 announcing that the United States is deploying the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf. The action is “to send a clear and unmistakable message to the Iranian regime that any attack on United States interests or on those of our allies will be met with unrelenting force.” There was no clarification regarding any warnings the United States had received about Iran’s activity.

Col. Larry Wilkerson reads the statement as an indication that Bolton is “trying to provoke something” in the gulf.

“He’s looking for an incident. That’s all I can see in it, because Iran does not threaten a country to whom we are, by Donald Trump’s own proud admission, selling $100 billion worth of arms to. Iran does not threaten a country that has more of the United States military power arrayed around it than any other place on the face of the earth. … How can this country threaten anything the United States has in the Strait, in the Gulf, or in the region, when we have so much superiority?”

Col. Wilkerson explained that Donald Trump’s intention could be to resume negotiations with Iran. “He wants to do a Kim Jong-un moment with Rouhani and Zarif. He wants to do it really close to the election, too, because it would be a real kick for him electorally.” However, he cautioned that Bolton’s plans for Iran have always focused on regime change.

“What worries me here, and you talk about the deployment of forces and so forth, and what might be going on with Saudi Arabia and with the UAE, and with Israel, really worries me,” said Col. Wilkerson, “because Trump’s attention to detail is almost nonexistant. … While John Bolton and his crew are making mischief with regard to Iran, and that crew might include some of these military forces that are deploying there, if we’re looking for an incident, it’s not going to be hard to manufacture one. If we’re looking for a Tonkin Gulf, if we’re looking for a smoking gun and a mushroom cloud, you know, those kinds of propagandistic things, those kinds of made up things that lead to war, then this is a perfect scenario in which to find something like that.”

Venezuela coup enthusiast Rubio says China is secretly propping up Maduro

Neocon US Senator and Venezuela regime change crusader Marco Rubio claims China is secretly backing President Nicolas Maduro by 'shutting down the internet' to thwart Washington-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido.

The Chinese are "single-handedly controlling the defensive cyber operations shutting down the internet," Rubio told Breitbart in an interview published Thursday, claiming that thanks to Beijing, opposition leader Juan Guaidó has "no access to the internet. Any time he tries to speak or communicate on social media, they shut down the internet. Literally, every time he holds a rally, they shut down the internet."

Apparently realizing he'd just admitted the US was meddling in Venezuelan affairs, the congressman threw in more mind-reading. "That is not the case here, but that is how they view it because they think that, if they allow that [re-democratization] to happen in one place, that would be a predicate for it to happen in other places, including, potentially, China itself."

China has refrained from explicitly endorsing Maduro or Guaidó since the latter declared himself president in January, instead backing "the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations." Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters on Tuesday that China supports an "inclusive political dialogue and consultation under Venezuela's constitution between the government and the opposition independently" while opposing "external interference and unilateral sanctions."

Over 300 French Journalists Denounce Police Violence Toward Yellow Vests

Over 300 media organisations, journalists, photographers, and others have signed a letter denouncing the sometimes brutal violence used against members of the Gilets Jaunes (Yellow Vest) movement and members of the press themselves in France.

The letter claims that press freedom in France has been suffering for years but entered a new phase following the start of the Yellow Vest protests in November of last year, Franceinfo reports.

“All these forms of violence have physical (injury), psychic (trauma) or financial (broken or confiscated equipment) consequences. We are personally and professionally denigrated and criminalized,” they wrote, and added that journalist David Dufresne had counted at least 698 cases of people being attacked or injured by police at the protests, including 85 journalists.

The signatories also complained of police demanding press cards, something not always available to independent journalists, saying, “As a reminder, journalism is not a regulated profession. It is not the press card that justifies our profession or not.”

“That is why we demand that the government take the necessary measures so that law enforcement agencies stop harassing us and let us work freely,” they added.

The issue of police violence towards members of the Yellow Vests has sparked concern from others, including medical professionals, who previously said they had never seen so many serious injuries, some of which have included lost hands and eyes, during a protest movement.

Earlier this week, one 19-year-old young woman was so badly injured by police during a protest in Marseille on December 8th that she has now filed attempted murder charges against the officers, saying she was hit by a rubber bullet and then brutally beaten by plainclothes officers as she lay on the ground.

According to the 19-year-old, she had only just left her retail job for the day before the assault and has been so badly injured that it took her four months to be able to return to her job.

New Federal Legislation Requires Full Audit of America’s Gold Reserves

U.S. Representative Alex Mooney (R-WV) introduced legislation this week to provide for the first audit of United States gold reserves since the Eisenhower Administration.

The Gold Reserve Transparency Act (H.R. 2559) – backed by the Sound Money Defense League and government accountability advocates – directs the Comptroller of the United States to conduct a “full assay, inventory, and audit of all gold reserves, including any gold in ‘deep storage,’ of the United States at the place or places where such reserves are kept.”

HR 2559 requires more than just a physical assay, inventory, and audit, however. Even if all United States gold can be physically accounted for, it may nevertheless be encumbered with third-party obligations – or otherwise be impaired by bank financialization.

Baghdadi has been appointed caliph by the jihadist group, which has seized large swathes of Iraq and Syria.

The sudden wave of violence unleashed by ISIS across Iraq and Syria was on such a scale that only state sponsorship could have accounted for it.

Creating the Perfect Enemy

In fact – the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as early as 2012 had even noted a Western and Persian Gulf-led conspiracy to create what it called at the time a “Salafist” [Islamic] “principality” [State] precisely in eastern Syria where ISIS would eventually find itself based.

The DIA document would explain (emphasis added):

If the situation unravels there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime, which is considered the strategic depth of the Shia expansion (Iraq and Iran).

On clarifying who these supporting powers were, the DIA memo would state:

The West, Gulf countries, and Turkey support the opposition; while Russia, China, and Iran support the regime.

House approves $17B disaster aid bill over Trump opposition on Puerto Rico

The House passed a $17.2 billion supplemental disaster relief package Friday in a 257-150 vote despite opposition from President Trump, who urged Republicans to vote against the measure because of what he saw as excessive funding for Puerto Rico.

Trump has argued that Puerto Rico has mismanaged aid already sent to the island after the devastation in 2017 from Hurricane Maria. On Thursday night, he pressed GOP lawmakers to oppose the measure.

“House Republicans should not vote for the BAD DEMOCRAT Disaster Supplemental Bill which hurts our States, Farmers & Border Security,” Trump tweeted.

Thirty-four Republicans voted for the bill despite the president's urgings.

The measure would extend the National Flood Insurance Program through Sept. 30, and provide aid to both Puerto Rico and states in the U.S. hit by flooding and other disasters.

Democrats have ripped Trump over the issue of Puerto Rico, arguing the president has sought to limit aid to the territory.

In the Senate, a similar battle is unfolding over funding.

GOP lawmakers are struggling to hash out a disaster bill, and some have expressed frustrations to the White House, pressing for Trump to agree to a deal.

Trump argued the island has received ample funding, tweeting that other areas impacted by natural disasters have been allocated lesser amounts.

In a pair of tweets on Monday, Trump said Puerto Rico had been given more money by Congress for hurricane relief than any state in history.

Trump’s comments on funding for Puerto Rico have been labeled false by some fact-checkers. The website Politifact wrote that Congress appropriated more funding for recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina than to Puerto Rico, while also noting that some money allocated for Puerto Rico has yet to be spent. It also noted that delivering aid to Puerto Rico is more expensive than to the mainland United States.

House Republicans have called for Democrats to work across the aisle to craft a bipartisan measure that can pass both chambers.

Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) told reporters Friday the Democrat-led bill failed to address a number of problems related to aiding disaster-stricken communities, alleging members across the aisle are playing politics with a critical issue.

“We're continuing to negotiate to try and reach a bipartisan agreement and I sure encourage Democrats to work with us to get that done — to get a bill passed that the president would sign that actually addresses the problems, that gets disaster relief as quickly as possible to the states that have been impacted,” he said.

The move follows sales worth $6 billion of the mobile surface-to-air missile system to both the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain earlier this week. Both countries are small US allies in the Persian Gulf and house major US military bases just a couple of dozen miles from Iranian territory.

Last month, the US also tested out the rapid deployment capabilities of its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) crews, another SAM system that prioritizes interception of ballistic missiles. The US sent 250 servicemembers to Israel's Nevatim Airbase to drill them on their ability to "rapidly surge combat-ready forces into and across the theater," Deputy Commander of the US Army in Europe Maj. Gen. Andrew J. Rowling said at the time.

Guaido Deputy Prosecuted For Failed Coup Flees to Colombia - Report

A deputy to self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido, earlier prosecuted for his role in the failed coup attempt on 30 April, has fled to Colombia, AFP reports.

Luis Florido, one of Juan Guaido's deputies, has announced he has fled Venezuela to Colombia neighbor, in a video posted on Twitter on Friday.

"I am out of the country, in Colombia, safe from a regime ready to imprison deputies," said Juan Guaido's deputy in this video.

HTS, Al-Qaeda & Turkish-Backed Militants Form Joint Operations Room In Idlib

Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), al-Qaeda-affiliated groups and factions backed by Turkey have formed a joint operations room in the northern governorate of Idlib, Nedaa Syria and several other opposition sources reported on May 10.

The new operation room is reportedly headed by HTS, which controls over 90% of Idlib territory. Many groups from the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL) coalition have joined the room, despite the presence of al-Qaeda-affiliated groups, such as Horas al-Din.

Naji Mustafa, a spokesman for the NFL, told Nedaa Syria that the joint room will command all offensive and defensive operations in Idlib and its surroundings.

“The military room aims to repel the Russian attack on the northern areas of Hama by the factions in general, in addition to avoiding previous mistakes,” the pro-opposition outlet quoted Mustafa as saying.

Few hours after the formation of the operations room, HTS and its allies launched an attack on the positions recently captured by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in northern Hama. The NFL is actively supporting the attack. However, it is unclear if the attack is commander by the new operations room.

In the last few years, Idlib factions formed several joint operations rooms. However, they failed each time, mostly due to HTS’ attempts to impose its will on all other groups.

A report published this week by the Israel Hayom newspaper apparently leaking details of President Donald Trump’s “deal of the century” reads like the kind of peace plan that might be put together by an estate agent or car salesman.

But while the authenticity of the document is unproven and indeed contested, there are serious grounds for believing it paves the direction of any future declaration by the Trump administration.

Not least, it is a synthesis of most of the Israeli right’s ambitions for the creation of a Greater Israel, with a few sops to the Palestinians — most of them related to partially relieving Israel’s economic strangulation of the Palestinian economy.

This is exactly what Jared Kushner told us the “deal of the century” would look like in his preview last month.

Also significant is the outlet that published the leak: Israel Hayom. The Israeli newspaper is owned by Sheldon Adelson, a U.S. casino billionaire who is one of the Republican Party’s chief donors and was a major contributor to Trump’s presidential election campaign funds.
