House Dems Subpoena Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, IRS Chief Over Trump’s Tax Returns
Another day, another subpoena.
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-MA) on Friday subpoenaed Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and IRS Chief Charles Rettig for the last six years of President Trump’s personal and business tax returns.
Mnuchin and Rettig have until next Friday to turn over the subpoenaed documents according to the Washington Post.
“The IRS is under a mandatory obligation to provide the information requested,” the subpoena states. “The IRS has had more than four weeks to comply with the Committee’s straightforward request. Therefore, please see the enclosed subpoena.”
“On April 3, I requested six years of the President’s personal and business tax returns… Unfortunately, the Treasury Department and the IRS have denied my reasonable request. Despite the agency’s denial, we on the Ways and Means Committee are still moving forward with our inquiry,” Neal said in a statement.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Monday formally rejected House Democrats’ request for President Trump’s tax returns.
Mnuchin told House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal in a letter that his committee’s request for Trump’s tax returns “lacks a legitimate legislative purpose.”
“Out of respect for the deadlines previously set by the Committee, and consistent with our commitment to a prompt response, I am informing you now that the Department may not lawfully fulfill the Committee’s request,” Mnuchin said, citing legal guidance from the Department of Justice.
Rep. Richard Neal, sent a letter to the IRS last month demanding President Trump’s tax returns for 2013 through 2018 as well as for several of Trump’s businesses.
“We’re under audit,” Trump told reporters last month. “Despite what people said and we’re working that out — I’m always under audit it seems — I’ve been under audit for many years because the numbers are big and guess when you have a name, you’re audited.”
“Until such time that I’m not under audit, I would not be inclined to do that,” Trump said.
The Democrat-media complex is gunning for Trump’s tax returns — On Wednesday evening, the New York Times obtained and published 10 years of Donald Trump’s tax documents from his federal income tax returns — for the years 1985 – 1994.
Currently there is no law requiring a US president/presidential candidate release their tax returns, but the Democrats don’t care about laws — they want to harass President Trump.
This legal battle over Trump’s taxes could find its way to the Supreme Court.
