Trouble for CNN over terror nation ties to TV analysts

A report highlighted by Donald Trump Jr. that some CNN national security analysts have undisclosed ties to a Middle Eastern nation that sponsors terrorism threatens to undercut the network’s support among Democrats and independents, according to a new survey. A poll of six battleground states found that likely voters, especially Democrats, believe the report, the latest evidence that President Trump’s attacks on CNN have had an impact.

The survey from WPA Intelligence came after Conservative Review revealed the undisclosed ties of CNN national security “regulars” to Qatar, a sponsor of terrorism. Donald Trump Jr. tweeted the story out, adding, “Shocked to hear this. Many of CNN's national security analysts have undisclosed ties to oppressive Qatari regime.”

Qatar has been in trouble with the administration over subsidizing its Qatar Airways and flooding U.S. routes in violation of an open-skies agreement that shuns subsidized airlines.

The “believability” poll tested three anti-Qatar messages and the one mentioning the CNN report topped the charts. It read: “The nation of Qatar is paying national security analysts, and specifically those working for CNN, who are speaking out positively on their behalf and not disclosing they are being paid by Qatar.” It was the “most effective” message in the poll. What’s more, it was the top message among Democrats and independents, two groups that have long supported CNN.

Republicans chose, instead, a message about American jobs being lost to the subsidized Qatar Airways. The poll also found support for Trump retaliating against Qatar for violating the open-skies agreement. Those results: Two-thirds of voters support efforts to stop Qatar Airways from violating international agreements (66%), which is strongest in Florida (71%) and Iowa (69%). Support is strongest among Republicans (79%), conservatives (77%), and voters without a college education but make over $75,000 (76%).

hough overall support did not adjust, invoking the president’s name caused partisanship support to increase (Republicans 82%, conservatives 80%). Support is now highest among voters in Florida (71%), Wisconsin (71%), and Iowa (70%).

Nearly half of all voters would be more favorable of the president (45%), with one-third claiming it would make no difference (14%). Less than one-fifth would become less favorable (14%). A plurality of all states would have a more favorable impression.

Two-thirds agree that immediate action must be taken by the president (67%) with a majority “strongly” agreeing (54%). Support is strongest in Florida (73%) and Wisconsin (71%).

Trump says China is slow-walking trade talks to negotiate with a Democrat instead

President Trump said Saturday that China's recent move to walk back concessions it had made in trade talks was an attempt to sabotage the deal so they could wait until a Democrat could replace him as president. The comments come the day after talks with Beijing failed to produce a deal to end the trade war and the administration moved to place 25% tariffs on all Chinese imports.

"I think that China felt they were being beaten so badly in the recent negotiation that they may as well wait around for the next election, 2020, to see if they could get lucky & have a Democrat win - in which case they would continue to rip-off the USA for $500 Billion a year," Trump tweeted. He added: "The only problem is that they know I am going to win (best economy & employment numbers in U.S. history, & much more), and the deal will become far worse for them if it has to be negotiated in my second term. Would be wise for them to act now, but love collecting BIG TARIFFS!" It was the second time inside a week Trump had alleged that China wanted to negotiate with Democrats rather than himself.

On Friday, the administration moved to raise existing tariffs on $250 billion worth of goods to 25%, up from 10% in most cases. The White House has also said it would place 25% levies on a further $300 billion worth of goods, effectively covering all Chinese imports. The administration said the increases were meant to pressure Beijing to reaffirm pledges it had made during recent trade trades that it attempted to back away from. China has said it will retaliate for the U.S. tariff hikes, without giving any specific details. The tariff hikes came the same day that U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin concluded a two-day meeting in Washington, D.C. with China's top negotiator, Vice Premier Liu He in an attempt to strike a last-minute deal. The talks failed to produce a deal, but both sides said they intended to hold further talks.

Maxine Waters demands Ben Carson withdraw 'senseless' proposal targeting 'mixed immigration' families

House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters demanded that the Trump administration withdraw a proposal to tighten regulations aimed at limiting public housing benefits to immigrants living in the country illegally. Waters and more than 20 committee Democrats criticized Saturday the "senseless" proposal from the Department of Housing and Urban Development after the agency acknowledged the policy could displace more than 55,000 children from public housing who are legal U.S. residents or citizens. The proposal, published Friday in the federal register, would target families in which at least one member is living in the country illegally.

Current rules already bar immigrants without legal status from receiving federal housing subsidies, but families of mixed immigration status — with at least one person being a legal resident — are exempted so they can all stay together. “This proposed rule is yet another proposal from HUD under your leadership that fundamentally contradicts the agency’s mission ‘to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all,’” the Democrats wrote in a Friday letter to Ben Carson, the Housing and Urban Development secretary. “This cruel and needless targeting of struggling immigrant families only contributes to historic patterns of inequality, which ultimately hinder the U.S. housing market and American economy.”

The new proposed rule would allow individual members of mixed families who have legal status to stay in public housing. But since other members of the family without status would be barred, the ones with legal status would be unlikely to stay for fear of separating the family, HUD’s own analysis found.

Leaked memo: Legal fees ‘draining NRA cash at mindboggling speed’

Leaked documents show the National Rifle Association racked up millions in legal bills in the last year. The documents include a memo written by the group’s former president Oliver North and NRA official Richard Childress to the NRA’s general counsel and audit committee chairman that warned of high legal fees posing “an existential threat to the financial stability of the NRA."

“The Brewer invoices are draining NRA cash at mindboggling speed,” North and Childress wrote in the memo that the Daily Beast verified as authentic. “This is a fiscal emergency.” Attorney Bill Brewer represents the NRA and defended his fees in April. “We’re a premium law firm, we make no bones about that,” he told the Wall Street Journal.

The memo, dated April 18, 2019, one week before North was ousted as the organization’s leader after clashing with CEO Wayne LaPierre, said Brewer charged the NRA more than $24 million since they retained him last year. Some of that was covered by a settlement against an insurance company, though the NRA was still responsible for more than $18 million.

North and Childress said the NRA is paying about $100,000 in legal fees per day. “$97,000+ a day is a stunning amount of money for any organization to pay,” they wrote. “It cries for an outside, independent review.” The pair said they had asked for an outside audit of the fees but LaPierre refused the request.

NRA officials pushed back on the claims and suggested it was being pushed by people with personal agendas. “The memo on the Brewer firm’s legal fees is inaccurate — it reflects a misinformed view of the firm, its billings, and its advocacy for the NRA,” said Charles L. Cotton, first vice president and chairman of the NRA’s Audit Committee. “It is troubling and a bit pathetic that some people would resort to leaking information to advance their agendas. This has no bearing on the board’s support of Wayne — and the work the NRA does to protect America’s constitutional freedoms,” NRA president Carolyn Meadows said.
