Facebook is accidentally generating terror content, claims whistle-blower
Social network’s software has automatically been creating ‘celebration’ and ‘memories’ videos for pages linked to extremists
Facebook is unwittingly auto-generating content for terror-linked groups that its artificial intelligence systems do not recognise as extremist, according to a complaint made public on Thursday.
The National Whistle-blowers Centre in Washington carried out a five-month study of the pages of 3,000 members who liked or connected to organisations proscribed as terrorist by the US government.
Researchers found that Islamic State and al-Qaeda were “openly” active on the social network and Facebook’s own software was automatically creating “celebration” and “memories” videos for extremist pages that had amassed enough views or “likes”.
The Whistle-blower’s Centre said it filed a complaint with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on behalf of a source that preferred to remain anonymous.
“Facebook’s efforts to stamp out terror content have been weak and ineffectual,” said an executive summary of the 48-page document shared by the centre. “Of even greater concern, Facebook itself has been creating and promoting terror content with its auto-generate technology.”

Man in Tanzania arrested for selling his six-year-old daughter for body parts in get rich scheme
Police said the dead girl’s foot was to be given to a healer to create a charm or potion that would make the father prosperous
A Tanzanian man has been arrested for selling his six-year-old daughter to be killed so that her body parts could be used in a potion to make him rich, police said Saturday.
A police statement said that the child, Rose Japhet, was killed last week and her body found in the southwestern district of Mbeya, in a region has been hit by a spate of ritual killings of children.
“The body was found decapitated and with the right foot amputated,” said the statement, adding the foot was found buried nearby.
“The motive of this murder was monetary. The father of the deceased took his daughter to a businessman for 5 million shillings (US$2,000) for her to be killed and her right foot amputated.”
The businessman, who was also arrested, was meant to “give the foot to a healer so that he would make a product which would make him (the father) prosperous”, said the statement.

Facebook Inc co-founder and former Mark Zuckerberg roommate Chris Hughes called for the break up of the world’s largest social media network in an opinion piece in The New York Times on Thursday.
Hughes joins US lawmakers who have also urged antitrust action to break up big tech companies as well as federal privacy regulation. Facebook has been under scrutiny from regulators around the world over its data-sharing practices and hate speech and misinformation on its networks.
“We are a nation with a tradition of reining in monopolies, no matter how well intentioned the leaders of these companies may be. Mark’s power is unprecedented and un-American,” Hughes wrote in his piece in The Times.
Facebook’s social network has more than two billion users across the world. It also owns WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, each used by more than a billion people. Facebook bought Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014.
