Hearst made money buying and selling stock in mines in Virginia City, NV. Which is where the real money was made up there. He started as a Hard Luck Miner in the 1849 gold rush at the age of 16. He eventually owned 1/6th of the Ophir Mine which was one of the first to discover that the blue "muck" that had to be removed from the Gold mines there was actually almost all Silver. Which made some people really rich really quick as the roads of VC (as we call it around here) were literally paved with Silver when this discovery happened

He bought his failure in life son William a newspaper so he would have a job and the rest is history.

Here in the Comstock we were left with no trees, toxic streams feeding our water supply, some 40,000 "prospects" that are still killing people to this day and not a whole lot else. Meanwhile the ore ripped out of our hills helped build San Fransicko into the modern metropolis it was in the late 1800's and financed the Union side of the Civil war.

Thank you. Taking the Mother of my children up to VC today for her day. I love it there. When I was a kid we explored all those mines with Radio Shack flashlights. VC is now a Historical National Monument but well over half of the awesome things to see there are shut off and underground. I only know of 2 people who have ventured into the Sutro tunnel and I am one.

Didn't know about the real dangers of mine exploring when we were a kid. Boxes of sweaty dynamite were just fun to throw down the shafts and run from.

How the area got the name "Comstock Lode" is a Load of shit too. I was aware of a little mentioned flood at one time and you could be right about the fire as it did engulf almost everything. We still get those floods here about every 10 years or so.

At one time the Comstock had 100,000 people living in it and was quite the crime ridden cesspool. Our legal whorehouses here are direct decedents of the Red Light District up there. On murder that happened up there resulted in the most widely attended funeral procession until JFK's funeral.

There is a Mellon Haiti connection too. Main Hospital in Port au Prince is a Mellon founded gig. Been years since I did a dig on the whole Robber Barons and their descendants.

I wish I had "archive offline"ed all that shit from so long ago. It's all lost on dead hard drives and not saved links.

Maybe Giggle could help. Anybody know how to get my web history out of them?

I'm on a James Jesus Angleton dig right now. Bigger fish to flip and fry than Old Money. I've got about 40 notepads open with a shit ton of stuff to organize. Didn't realize I could write a voluminous set of books about one counterintelligence guy. Which I may do.
