Does this sound plausible?

Donate money to a, "charitable," foundation, write it off as a charitable donation for tax break, then who ever runs the foundation kicks some of it back to you in various ways and forms.

Right. So we understand at least some of their mechanisms for laundering. We have

  1. Human trafficking that needs a way to launder

  2. Drugs that need a way to launder

  3. Political donations to hide

  4. Political donations are probably just a different way of saying, payoffs

  5. It's all tied together globally

  6. Certain, "families," seem to be at the helm of all this stuff and probably have been for centuries

So this is mainly the finance side of things, then you need a distribution network to distribute all those drugs, humans etc. Ports of entry need to be controlled. Customs needs to either be paid off or bypassed. You need a way to hide the actual product from prying eyes.

Yeah probably, but I'm trying to look at the whole thing logically. It's a matter of logistics. This is business as far as they are concerned and approach it with business like solutions.
