Burisma Lawyer: Investigation into Biden Company Continued Well into 2016

 

In March 2016, Joe Biden threatened to withhold IMF funding from Ukraine if officials did not fire Viktor Shokin, who was then serving as Ukraine’s Prosecutor General. At the time, Shokin’s office was overseeing an investigation into Burisma and its owner, Mykola Zlochevsky. According to Bloomberg’s source, Shokin’s investigation had been “shelved” in 2015, well before Biden’s intervention, and “[t]here was no pressure from anyone from the U.S. to close cases against Zlochevsky.” Various outlets seized on the report to dismiss coverage of the Biden scandal:

 

PolitiFact: “It’s not even clear that the company was actively under investigation”

Axios: “Ukrainian official knocks down Biden conflict scandal”

New York Magazine: “The investigation into Burisma was dead long before Biden started his campaign to oust Shokin”

The problem with these claims is that they are contradicted by Burisma’s own attorney. John D. Buretta, an American attorney representing Burisma at the time, was interviewed by the Kyiv Post in 2017. Buretta described the cases against Zlochevsky as extending well into 2016, fitting the timeline reported by The Hill and the New York Times.

Facebook pledges higher wages, more counseling for content moderators

 

Facebook on Monday announced that it will increase wages and offer more counseling to its thousands of content moderators in the U.S., most of whom are contract workers who have complained of unfair working conditions.

 

The embattled tech giant in a blog post said it is rolling out the reforms after hearing from content moderators and heeding advice from psychologists on its "global resiliency team."

 

Facebook said it will pay at least $22 per hour to content moderators in the San Francisco area, New York City and Washington, D.C.; $20 per hour to content moderators in Seattle; and $18 per hour for those in all other U.S. metro areas.

 

It is also adding "preferences" that allow content moderators to customize how they see certain content – for example, they will now be allowed to blur out graphic images by default before reviewing them.

 

"We made these changes after hearing feedback that reviewers want more control over how they see content that can be challenging," Janelle Gale, Facebook's vice president of scaled operations, said in the post.

Biden’s campaign spent $238,560 on Facebook advertising between May 5 and May 11, according to figures released on Sunday.

 

This far outstripped the second-placed advertiser, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) with $88,048. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) ranked third in spending with a $77,880 outlay.

B-52s conduct first mission of counter-Iran deployment

 

"This was the first mission of the Bomber Task Force deployed to U.S. Central Command area of responsibility in order to defend American forces and interests in the region,” Air Forces Central Command (AFCENT) said in a brief statement alongside photos of the bombers taking off.

 

AFCENT also released images Monday of F-15Cs and F-35As taking part in “deterrence” flights in the region Sunday. The photos showed the F-15s, F-35s and B-52s being refueled by a KC-135 in the air over an undisclosed location in the region.

 

Neither release elaborated on the flights.
