I went through this - and put family/friends thru hell as well. My mother and a friend were my best sources of support - my mother because she pointed me to all of the negatives on anti-depressants, and a friend who pointed me toward nutrition. I'm not talking just about eating well; I'm talking about having the ingredients available for your body to produce the neurotransmitters necessary for healthy function.
Medicine is all about treating the symptoms; but long-term medication has its own drawbacks. Briefly - stress, alcohol, smoking, caffeine, antibiotics are just a few of the factors that deplete Vit. C, B-complex, E and other nutritional elements such as tryptophan, glutathionone, and minerals. All of these are essential for the body to produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin - which, BTW, is typically the only one targeted by anti-depressants, yet it's only one of three that the body requires.
If you wish to explore further, I'd recommend The Vitamin Bible by Earl Mindell. It's the most comprehensive that I've found in terms of explaining deficiencies and causes and suggesting ways to offset them.
