‘Art of the Deal’: Richard Burr Relents on Trump, Jr. Subpoena, Agrees to Strict Limits on Scope, Length of Interview

Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) has relented regarding the subpoena he issued of Donald Trump, Jr., which was originally open-ended in terms of scope and topics, as well as without limits on the length of time for the interview.

Now, after a sustained pressure campaign from allies of the president and the first family, Burr has agreed to limit the scope and topics of the interview, as well as the length of time the president’s eldest son will be expected to appear.

Trump, Jr., will now, sources familiar with the deal that Burr and Trump, Jr.,cut early this week appear in early June sometime before the committee for between two and four hours–but no longer, terms that Burr originally opposed limiting. The scope of topics is also going to be limited. The deal that Burr has agreed to comes after last week the matter blew up in serious public fashion in Burr’s face–where an embarrassing amount of Republicans undercut Burr, including several members of his own Senate Intelligence Committee, several other committee chairs, and his own home state colleague.

Cotton on Trump Jr. Subpoena: I Hope We Can Get Info We Need, We’re Not Doing a Criminal Investigation

Tom Cotton (R-AR) discussed the committee’s subpoena of Donald Trump Jr., and said that the committee is conducting “a counterintelligence inquiry, not a criminal investigation” to find out “what techniques Russia uses, so we can make sure that they don’t do it again in the future.”

Cotton said, “You’ve got to remember that what we’re doing is a counterintelligence inquiry, not a criminal investigation. Senator Burr (R-NC) has already said, there’s no collusion found by our committee. That’s because there was no collusion. What we’re trying to do is get to the bottom of exactly what Russia was up to, so we know what techniques Russia uses, so we can make sure that they don’t do it again in the future.”

China: Social Credit System Has ‘Restored Morality’ by Blacklisting over 13 Million People

China’s state-run newspaper Global Times revealed in a column defending the nation’s authoritarian “social credit system” Monday that the communist regime had blacklisted 13.49 million Chinese citizens for being “untrustworthy.”

The article did not specify what these individuals did to find themselves on the list, though the regime has revealed the system assigns a numerical score to every Chinese citizen based on how much the Communist Party approves of his or her behavior. Anything from jaywalking and walking a dog without a leash to criticizing the government on the internet to more serious, violent, and corrupt crimes can hurt a person’s score. The consequences of a low credit score vary, but most commonly appear to be travel restrictions at the moment.

Cotton: US could win war with Iran in 'two strikes'

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a prominent foreign policy hawk, voiced confidence in a new interview that the U.S. could win a war with Iran, saying it would take “two strikes.”

“Yes, two strikes,” he told “Firing Line’s” Margaret Hoover when asked if the U.S. could win a war against Iran. “The first strike and the last strike.”

Cotton said that he would not advocate for a war with Iran but warned there would be a “furious response” to any provocation against U.S. interests in the region.

“I don’t advocate military action against Iran. I’m simply delivering the message that if Iran were to attack the United States it would be a grave miscalculation on their part and there would be a furious response,” he said.

Beijing calls for a 'people's war' against the US as Trump threatens tariffs on another $300 billion of Chinese goods in all-out trade battle

In a series of editorials and op-ed articles published Monday, Chinese state media slammed what it labeled the Trump administration's "greed and arrogance" and called for a "people's war" against it. Beijing's state-run media effectively serves as a mouthpiece for the Communist Party.

"The most important thing is that in the China-US trade war, the US side fights for greed and arrogance … and morale will break at any point. The Chinese side is fighting back to protect its legitimate interests," the nationalistic Global Times tabloid wrote in a Chinese-language editorial carried by Xinhua News Agency.

"The trade war in the US is the creation of one person and one administration, but it affects that country's entire population. In China, the entire country and all its people are being threatened. For us, this is a real 'people's war.'"
