in 1979, when they were holding Americans hostage, I was in basic training and the drill sergeants kept yelling at us, "yer goin' to Iran", and they substituted the word Iran for Vietnam in the double time cadences.

Ah, memories!

How do they function in a country where they are living illegally?

If I managed to get into another country without the proper papers, I wouldn't last 5 minutes!

Well, what I remember (I was 19 at the time), is Reagan was elected in Nov. of 1980, and on the day that he was inaugurated, Jan. 20, 1980, the hostages were all released. I was stationed at Ft. Carson, 4th infantry division, and the church bells on post started ringing. We wondered if they were ringing for the inauguration, or if they were ringing bc the hostages were released.

We were never deployed to Iran.
