UK General: No Sign of Increased Threats From Iran or ‘Proxies’

Says UK intelligence is in line with US intelligence on the matter

The narrative of an “increased threat” posed by Iran and its proxies across the Middle East is being used to justify a US military buildup and a general escalation of tensions in the area. British Maj. Gen. Chris Ghika, however, has raised serious doubts about that.

Maj. Gen. Ghika said that there has been “no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces,” despite the claims from US officials, mostly Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and John Bolton. Perhaps more damningly, Ghika says he does not believe there is any daylight between Britain’s assessment of “no increased threat” and the assessment from US intelligence.

In other words, the US officials are lying about the intelligence, presumably to justify the growing US buildup and to keep hyping the possibility of a war with Iran. US Central Command, however, angrily shot back contradicting Ghika, insisting his statement runs counter to established US position on the matter.

CENTCOM’s statement is not exactly a refutation of Ghika’s position on UK and US intelligence. Rather, it refers to “identified credible threats” but provides no indication where they came from. It clearly wasn’t intelligence agencies, because the threats were only made available to intelligence agencies after their identification.

Early reports on the “Iranian proxies” allegation suggested it came out of Israel, and that it was built around Israeli officials believing it would make sense for Iran to do that sort of thing to attack the US. This could suggest it was never verified by US or UK intelligence, and was rather just accepted as the official version because it fit with US policy at the time.

Only, they did not catch fire, the vapors did not explode (if they were empty) and there's no pictures and no casualties. Israel would not be stupid enough to do this after having the lid blown off a plan the way it was with the "10 oil tankers ablaze", but the Sauds? Alabama Senate passes bill that bans nearly all abortions, sending it to the governor's desk

The Alabama state Senate passed a bill that would ban nearly all abortions in the state, sending it to Republican Gov. Kay Ivey's desk. If she signs it, the bill would become the nation's strictest pro-life law.

The bill passed the Senate by a 25-6 margin, after passing the house 74-3. Ivey has not said publicly whether or not she will sign the bill, although she is expected to. It has been the source of horrifying comments by Democratic legislators and chaotic shouting matches in the Legislature.

Under the bill, abortion is banned in all cases except in situations when it would be necessary in order to save the life of the mother. There are no exceptions for rape or incest, which the author, state Rep. Terri Collins, said was intentional in order to give the bill a higher chance of forcing federal court, and eventually Supreme Court challenges.

Mothers who get abortions would not be prosecuted under this law. Those who perform abortions would be criminally charged and could face between 10 and 99 years in prison if convicted.

This bill, which goes even further toward banning abortion than Georgia's pro-life "heartbeat" abortion law, is another attempt to force the issue of abortion before the Supreme Court with the aim of weakening or overturning Roe v. Wade.

"This bill is about challenging Roe v. Wade and protecting the lives of the unborn because an unborn baby is a person who deserves love and protection," Collins said, according to The Washington Post. "I have prayed my way through this bill. This is the way we get where we want to get eventually."

With a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, Democrats have grown concerned about what might happen if the court takes up an abortion case. Some states have begun the process of amending state constitutions in case Roe v. Wade is overturned.

Pennyslvania sues maker of OxyContin, 'jet fuel' of America's opioid crisis

Dr Jeffrey Bado received his first sales visit from a Purdue Pharma representative in September 2005. In the next five years, his prescriptions of OxyContin – the “jet fuel” of America’s opioid crisis, according to Pennsylvania’s attorney general – increased by 600%, as Purdue reps visited two to three times a week. Now, a lawsuit in the state seeks to hold the company accountable.

The lawsuit, filed 2 May by the state attorney general, Josh Shapiro, and announced on Tuesday, accuses Purdue Pharma, the Connecticut-based maker of OxyContin, of deceptive marketing and criminal negligence in pushing doctors to prescribe the opioid.

“We’ve lost lives, we’ve lost money and we’ve squandered opportunity,” said Shapiro in a press conference Tuesday. Meanwhile, opioids have been a “goldmine” for Purdue, which has made more than $35bn in revenue since OxyContin was released in 1996, he said. “While Purdue and its executives were profiting and lining their own pockets, they were leaving a path of loss, heartache and bills for someone else in Pennsylvania to pay,” he added.

Pennsylvania’s suit follows a wave of legal action against the pharmaceutical giant, and in some cases, certain members of the multibillionaire Sackler family, who own the company. More than three dozen states have sued Purdue for underplaying the risks of addiction, and a consolidation of 1,500-plus lawsuits filed by US cities and counties is currently playing out in a federal courthouse in Cleveland.

Pennsylvania’s lawsuit, however, is the first to allege in detail a prolific and calculated scheme of pushing drugs on prescribers – a ruthlessly profitable “marketing blitzkrieg” targeting doctors such as Bado, who was convicted of fraud and drug distribution felonies in 2016. According to the complaint, Pennsylvania, one of the hardest-hit states in the opioid crisis, received half a million sales visits by Purdue reps since 2007 – the highest of any state except California.
