this is a hamam, or turkish bathhouse. historically, it is where people bathed considering noone had running water. when i was in turkey i visited ephesus and there was a bathhouse among the ruins. it was a popular thing, not just a necessity but a social gathering as well. i went to one once when i was 15. needless to say i was traumatized with all the nakedness. many people had towels around them but many did not. an attendant will come by, if you want, and scrub you down with a very course washcloth to exfoliate you and massage as well, but we did not do it thank god. all ages were there, everyone totally relaxed, mothers washing their kids, etc. acting like they do it all the time. it's segregated, of course, which is probably why the room looked different. there are also private rooms which is what we did. you get a towel and a bowl or pitcher when you get there and you sit by a faucet and do your thing. when i went to turkey last year i saw signs for them all over the place. this is a luxury hotel and the girls are clearly relaxed and playing
