Protection From The Big CME
Q, if you are reading or Q+ even better! To cut to the chase, a "Carrington Event" level CME will pose the greatest risk to our NUKE PLANTS as ALL of their huge, very huge TRANSFORMERS will be fried by the Ground Induced Currents (GICs) which runs the massive currents from the ground up through the transformers foundations and which begins melting the hundreds of "electrical steel" transformer plates thereby destroying the transformers. Any emergency generators will also be fried by the CME. We can live without electricity for awhile but having EVERY U.S. Nuke Plant meltdown at the same time will cause the big problem. So protecting the emergency generators from the CME/EMP in order to scram shut the reactors is paramount. Faraday-protected emergency back up systems are critical.
To get power back to the Country, 1) the plants' transformers will either have to be protected before the CME hits, or 2) a NEW generator has to be fabricated, supplied and installed.
With choice #1, there will be only a 30 minute window when our solar birds detect an incoming CME can notify a CENTRAL COMMAND which can scram ALL reactors in order to protect the transformers. I can't imagine how @POTUS or any system can shut down the nations power plants in 30 minutes, but theoretically possible.
2) Replacing the Transformers. There are 6-10 month backlogs in supplying these huge transformers AND they are manufactured with special ELECTRICAL steel which is forged in a manner which orients the steel molecules/crystaline structure in the SAME DIRECTION. We import 99% of ELECTRICAL STEEL! Although you've been told of our need for independence on our Electrical Steel Supply (and our special "hull-steel" for our very quiet Virginia Class Subs), the current trade war with China is STILL hurting the planned huge increase in domestic steel production. I believe it's due to secondary impacts which are affecting our steel industry which is rearing to go.
