Bayer Has Now Lost Over 44% of Its Value Since Its Monsanto Merger
Bayer’s stock price hit an almost seven-year low Tuesday, in the wake of a third U.S. jury verdict that found its Roundup weedkiller to be a cause of people’s cancer.
A Californian jury said Monday that Bayer had to pay Alva and Alberta Pilliod, both of whom had used the herbicide that Bayer acquired via Monsanto last year, $2 billion in punitive damages and $55 million in compensatory damages. The Pilliods both have non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The level of punitive damages may be reduced on appeal, but right now it’s the eighth-biggest product-defect jury award in U.S. history.
Bayer’s management was already in hot water over the wisdom of the Monsanto takeover, with shareholders having effectively told CEO Werner Baumann in a no-confidence vote last month that his job is in jeopardy. Now the heat has been cranked up.

Bayer apologizes over secret list of Monsanto critics
The German chemicals giant has promised a probe into allegations it created a list of 200 French journalists and lawmakers who were critical of its US subsidiary. France wants to know if the data was collected illegally.
Germany's Bayer, which bought the US agrochemical firm Monsanto, issued an apology on Sunday following reports that its American subsidiary drew up a list of those critical of the firm's practices.
"After an initial analysis, we understand that such a project raised concerns and criticism," Bayer said in a statement. "This is not the way Bayer would seek dialogue with different stakeholders and society, so we apologize."
The Leverkusen-headquartered firm said it would hire a law firm to carry out an external investigation into the matter.
The French prosecutor said Friday it had opened a probe after newspaper Le Monde filed a complaint.

'We have recently discontinued certain older versions of Creative Cloud applications and and a result, under the terms of our agreement, you are no longer licensed to use them,' Adobe said in the email.

Canada Moves to Ban Christians From Demonstrating in Public Under New Anti-Hate Proposal
Legislation proposed in the Canadian province of Ontario would criminalize public displays by Christians deemed hateful to Muslims, the LGBT community and other victim groups designated by the left.
The bill, “Prohibiting Hate-Promoting Demonstrations at Queen’s Park Act, 2019,” bans any demonstration, rally or other activity that is deemed hateful by the Speaker from being permissible on legislative grounds – effectively insulating the government from Christian speech.

Millennials Besieged by Chronic Illness: From Age 27, It’s All “Downhill”

Unless we start admitting what we already know about environmental culprits and become willing to do something about them, children, young adults and our nation are going to continue to get short-changed.
Millennials (the generation born between the early 1980s and approximately the mid-1990s) just got some bad news. Health insurance data from 2017 show that many of them, especially older millennials in their mid-30s, are facing unprecedented levels of mental and physical illness.
…over half (54%) of millennial respondents reported having been diagnosed with at least one chronic illness.
According to a report released in April by the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Association, millennials’ sharp decline in health begins around the tender age of 27 and stands in stark contrast to the health of the preceding generation—Generation X, born in the mid-1960s. For eight of 10 health conditions, millennials are experiencing double-digit increases in prevalence compared to what Gen Xers experienced at the same ages. Although four out of five millennials, ironically, perceive themselves to be in “good” or “excellent” health, both the BCBS report and a 2016 Harris Poll survey put the lie to these perceptions. In the survey, over half (54%) of millennial respondents reported having been diagnosed with at least one chronic illness.

​Three times during the first 25 years of its existence, Israel had soundly beaten the armed forces of the neighboring Arab states, who wanted to wipe Israel off the map. In the Six Day War of 1967, the Israelis had greatly expanded their defensive depth by capturing the Sinai peninsula, the Golan Heights, and the West Bank of the Jordan River.
By 1973, the Israelis had grown dangerously overconfident. Israeli military intelligence rated the probability of war as “very low.” The deployment of Israeli Defense Forces in the Sinai and on the Golan Heights was thin.
In an article published in July 1973, Yitzhak Rabin, former IDF chief of staff and a future prime minister, cited a “widening gap of military power in Israel’s favor” and said that “Israel’s military strength is sufficient to prevent the other side from gaining any military objective.”
Israel ignored warning signals that Egypt and Syria were preparing to reopen the conflict. In March 1973, Egyptian Premier Anwar Sadat told Newsweek that “everything in this country is now being mobilized in earnest for the resumption of the battle, which is now inevitable.” As late as the evening of Oct. 5, Israeli intelligence had raised no alarm.
When Egypt and Syria attacked Oct. 6—on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Israel—the IDF was not mobilized and was caught by surprise.

Documents reveal EU bowed to demands of pesticide lobbies
An environmental nonprofit has obtained documents showing the extent to which the European Commission has been lobbied by pesticide producers seeking to protect their interests, leading to a more lenient regulation of these controversial substances.
The environmental group, Pesticide Action Network (PAN), has obtained over 600 documents from the Commission showing top EU officials fighting to “cripple” the bloc’s pesticide protection legislation.
“The Commission has chosen the side of the industry,” PAN’s Chemicals Coordinator Hans Muilerman told De Morgen.
In its report, PAN says that the documents show how top EU Health officials have bent to the demands of “chemical and farming interests” to derail legislation which would have resulted in the ban of 32 dangerous pesticides.
“A number of [EU] health officials, up to the most senior people in the Commission, have used their position to serve the interests of the industry,” Bart Staes, an MEP for the European Greens told De Morgen.
The harmful effects of some pesticides on human and animal health have been known of since the 1990s, and public pressure has been piling on authorities to take regulatory action against them.
PAN’s report comes after the European Court of Justice ruled in its favour after a two-year legal fight, ordering the Commission to release the documents

As Disney Lays off 3,000 Workers Post-Merger, Fox Corp. Gives Every Employee Stock Bonuses
Call it a tale of two media giants. In the wake of the $71.3 billion merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox, Disney began taking steps to lay off 3,000 workers Thursday. Meanwhile, every employee who remained at Fox Corp. will receive a modest stock bonus, according to reports.
Disney yesterday completed its merger with 21st Century Fox, taking ownership of Fox film and TV studios and some networks like FX and National Geographic. Other Fox assets remain inside Fox Corp., including the Fox Broadcasting channel, Fox News, Fox Sports, and a network of TV stations.
According to Variety, Fox Corp. CEO Lachlan Murdoch held a company-wide meeting and announced that each employee who has been at the company for more than 20 years would receive stock worth $3,000, while those with shorter tenures would receive smaller packages.
