Intel to build $3.5B chip plant in Israel
It will make chips using an advanced 45-nanometer process

Intel Corp. announced today that it plans to immediately begin construction of a $3.5 billion advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility in Kiryat Gat, Israel.
Called Fab 28, the plant will be Intel's seventh facility worldwide capable of producing 300mm silicon wafers, from which its microprocessors are cut. Intel currently has five 300mm chip plants in the U.S. and another in Ireland.
Compared to the more common practice of making chips from 200mm wafers, making chips from 300mm wafers uses 40% less energy and water per chip and reduces manufacturing costs, the company said.
