Regarding Gina Haspel's appointment as CIA head, and the issue of torture:
We ourselves are in the fight against torturers of children. It more than bothers all of us in that context. But there is a big difference between routinely torturing for sadistic, selfish reasons and trying to find out something that is for the good of the vast majority. The men whose torture Haspel oversaw in the past—-we do not know what information was being sought, or why. Maybe those guys were involved in human trafficking or some other vile things.
But torture is not a trivial issue. I agree with those who say it is largely ineffective. Should be considered on a case by case basis and only used in the most dire of circumstances. Example: perp knows details of impending terror attack that might kill thousands.
But why would it be needed now? Our minds can be read. Am willing to give Haspel the benefit of the doubt because I trust POTUS.
