They're forcing it now because they all know RBJ won't be in the Supreme Court much longer. Also, it gives both major parties the "muh Supreme Court" excuse to bully people into voting.
Otherwise I agree. Most Americans are moderate on the abortion issue (either moderate pro-choice or moderate pro-life). The whole issue has been hijacked by extremists on both sides so that we're now forced to choose between "total ban, no exceptions" or "infanticide."
