Poland tightens laws on paedophiles after film on priest sex abuse goes viral

Poland on Thursday raised jail terms for convicted paedophiles to a maximum 30 years after a groundbreaking documentary on child sex abuse among Polish priests sparked public outrage and a crisis in the devoutly Catholic country's church.

Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favour of changes to the criminal code that also introduce life sentences for the most dangerous paedophiles and remove a statute of limitations on prosecution of the most drastic cases of child sex abuse.

The changes introduced by the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) government, which is closely allied with Poland's powerful Roman Catholic church, come just ten days ahead of a tight race in elections to the European Parliament.

Posted on YouTube on Saturday, the "Tell No One" film by brothers Tomasz and Marek Sekielski has been viewed nearly 18 million times.

Guatemala’s Anti-Corruption Fight Inspired Latin America. It May be Shut Down.

GUATEMALA CITY — Jailed in the squalid barracks of a military base, members of Guatemala’s once untouchable elite plot their return to power.

Former presidents and ministers, legislators, judges and business owners, all accused in a yearslong battle against graft, spend their idle hours gardening, strumming guitars, studying English, barbecuing for Sunday visitors — and waging a campaign to crush the anti-corruption drive that put them in jail.

Their target is a panel of international investigators, backed by the United Nations, that has led one of the most effective fights against corruption in Latin America and set an example for a region that has struggled to curb the graft that is at the root of much inequality and violence.

UK gets new weapons act, secures Sikh right to carry kirpans

LONDON: A new Offensive Weapons Bill aimed at tackling rising knife crime in the UK completed its journey through Parliament to become an act of law after receiving the Royal Assent of Queen Elizabeth II this week.

The bill had been amended late last year to ensure that it would not impact the right of the British Sikh community to possess and supply kirpans, or religious swords.

75 Media Mistakes in the Trump Era: The Definitive List

We the media have “fact-checked” President Trump like we have fact-checked no other human being on the planet—and he’s certainly given us plenty to write about. That’s probably why it’s so easy to find lists enumerating and examining his mistakes, missteps and “lies.”
But as self-appointed arbiters of truth, we’ve largely excused our own unprecedented string of fact-challenged reporting. The truth is, formerly well-respected, top news organizations are making repeat, unforced errors in numbers that were unheard of just a couple of years ago.
Iran: Fear of war and the regime’s gradual disintegration

Iran, May 17, 2019 - Last Sunday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ (IRGC) newly appointed chief went to the regime’s Majlis (parliament) to reassure the horrified members that there will not be war.

Regardless of future developments, the current situation in Iran shows very well how hollow and vulnerable the “revolutionary” power structure of the theocracy has become.

Dispatching U.S. battleships to the Persian Gulf on the one hand and growing popular discontent and economic misery on the other has created an avalanche of desires for negotiations on both sides of the political aisle inside the Iranian regime.

Naghavi Hosseini, one of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s minions in the Majlis’ National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, while pretending to have an anti-U.S. stance, alluded to negotiations with the “Great Satan.”

“At the end of the day, we don’t know what approach they want to implement and how they want to solve these paradoxes? Recently, we witnessed them backing off from their past positions and they have even announced that they will forgo past conditions and are ready to negotiate,” he said.

According to the Jomhuri Eslami newspaper, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations also indicated Tehran’s willingness to negotiate with the U.S.

Iran: Names of 11 Political Prisoners Arrested during Late April and May

International call to visit Iran prisons and to meet political prisoners

NCRI, May 17, 2019 - The mullah’ regime, incapable of confronting the frustrated youths, resistance units, and popular resistance councils, fearful of the explosive state of the society, worried about the consequences of blacklisting Khamenei's IRGC and new sanctions, once again has intensified repression and arrests.

The appointment of head henchman Raeisi as the head of the judiciary and the appointment of the IRGC’s Salami, Fadavi and Naghdi, three of the cruelest revolutionary guards as the commander, deputy commander, and coordinator of the IRGC, is a part of Khamenei's futile efforts to contain the crisis of overthrow of the regime that has stretched all over the clerical regime.

The transfer of Hash al-Shabi forces from Iraq to the flood-hit areas, launching night patrols and "neighborhood-based security patrols", called the Razavioun, and the new wave of arrests throughout the country, especially among the supporters of the PMOI, are part of the repressive measures of religious fascism to prevent popular uprisings. The names of 11 arrestees in late April 2019 are as follows:

Nematollah Hakimi Kiasarai, 46, Tehran

Salar Eskandarzadeh, 29, Tehran

Hamid Reza Haddadi, 36, Kermanshah

Dariush Hosseini, 65, Mahshahr

Mohammad Khatibnia, 28, Khorramabad

Reza Nabavi. 24, Semnan

Mohsen Hosseini, 23, with his two brothers, Neyshabur

Mahmoud Salami, 25, Neyshabur

Shokouh Majd, 55, Neyshabur

The PMOI had previously announced the names of 28 earlier detainees on April 23, 2019.

Mullah Alavi, the clerical regime's Minister of Intelligence, reported on April 19, 2019, the arrests of 116 teams linked to the PMOI in the past year. Subsequently, the Director General of the regime’s intelligence in East Azarbaijan Province on April 24, 2019, gave the figure of 110 arrests and encounter with the Mojahedin in the province in 2018. The actual number of arrests is much higher. The repressive organs of the mullahs' regime, such as the IRGC, the IRGC's intelligence, law enforcement, and prosecutors, have had their own arrests.

You’ve been warned: Widespread US face surveillance is ‘imminent reality’, says tech privacy report

Georgetown researchers are warning Americans about a sophisticated real-time face surveillance system that’s about to become an “imminent reality” for millions of citizens across the country.

The ‘America Under Watch’ report is a warning that authorities in select US cities may soon be able to pick you out from a crowd, identify you, and trace your movements via a secret network of cameras constantly capturing images of your face.

The report claims both Detroit and Chicago purchased software from a South Carolina company, DataWorks Plus, that gives police the ability to scan live video from cameras located at businesses, health clinics, schools, and apartment buildings. Both cities say they are not currently using the technology.

Facial recognition software has proven problematic for violating ppl’s civil liberties and discriminating against Black people and (to a lesser extent), other POC. Seems like a waste of an investment given the composition of the city of #Detroit.

I think it's helpful to treat privacy like a form of environmental health. Violations of privacy are sometimes individual, and always collective.

— sarah jeong (@sarahjeong) May 17, 2019

DataWorks says it provides software which “provides continuous screening and monitoring of live video streams.” The system is also designed to operate on “not less than 100 concurrent video feeds.”

According to the research team’s report, live footage is captured by cameras installed around Detroit as part of Project Green Light, a public-private initiative to deter crime which launched in 2016. The expanse of the police department’s facial recognition policy last summer, however, means the face recognition technology can now be connected to any live video, including security cameras, drone footage, and body-worn cams.
