Principal Akbar Cook keeps school open Friday nights as safe haven for students

Hundreds of teens spend their Friday night inside West Side High School in Newark, New Jersey because it’s a safe, judgement free save haven as part of the Lights On program, launched by Principal Akbar Cook.

Cook previously made headlines when he put a laundry room at the school after his students were being bullied over their dirty clothes. The move was made possible after he secured a $20,000 grant from PSE&G and with the help of labor from Newark Public Schools, he turn the football team’s locker room into a free, on-campus laundromat, CBS New York reported.

“Confidence is a big thing with everyone. To feel that you smell good, look good, I think that goes a long way,” Cook told the outlet.

He launched the Lights On program four years ago, which is open to everyone three nights out of the week during the summer. The program supports 2,000 kids, according to the Atlantic Black Star.

“Anything that keeps me off the streets I’ll do,” one student shared with ABC News 7. “Selling drugs and stuff, I’m not into that.”

“I just realized that if I come here I’ll see friendly faces,” another said.

“Security,” added another student.

“I haven’t lost any more kids to gun violence since the start of the school year,” Cook told the station.

“It’s fun. Safe, too,” one student said. “It’s better than being out on the streets.”

Every Friday night until 11 p.m., the space offers a recording studio for aspiring musicians to lay down tracks and hone their skills. Students can also engage in various games and activities and enjoy free hot meals on Friday nights.

So skeptical. Could be on the up and up. Seems an ideal way to pick out vulnerable kids to use and abuse.

(article from 6/22/18)

Here's the original Time article from 6/22/18:

Exclusive: Navy Document Shows Plan to Erect 'Austere' Detention Camps

The U.S. Navy is preparing plans to construct sprawling detention centers for tens of thousands of immigrants on remote bases in California, Alabama and Arizona, escalating the military’s task in implementing President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy for people caught crossing the Southern border, according to a copy of a draft memo obtained by TIME.

The internal document, drafted for the Navy Secretary’s approval, signals how the military is anticipating its role in Trump’s immigration crackdown. The planning document indicates a potential growing military responsibility in an administration caught flat-footed in having to house waves of migrants awaiting civilian criminal proceedings.

The Navy memo outlines plans to build “temporary and austere” tent cities to house 25,000 migrants at abandoned airfields just outside the Florida panhandle near Mobile, Alabama, at Navy Outlying Field Wolf in Orange Beach, Alabama, and nearby Navy Outlying Field Silverhill.

The memo also proposes a camp for as many as 47,000 people at former Naval Weapons Station Concord, near San Francisco; and another facility that could house as many as 47,000 people at Camp Pendleton, the Marines’ largest training facility located along the Southern California coast. The planning memo proposes further study of housing an undetermined number of migrants at the Marine Corps Air Station near Yuma, Arizona.

The planning document estimates that the Navy would spend about $233 million to construct and operate a facility for 25,000 people for a six-month time period. The proposal suggests these tent cities be built to last between six months and one year.

Capt. Greg Hicks, Navy’s chief spokesman, declined to provide details on the matter. “It would be inappropriate to discuss internal deliberative planning documents,” he told TIME.

Although the military has not yet been ordered to construct these new detention facilities, it is clear it bracing to join a policy challenge that is ricocheting throughout the whole of government. What began as a crackdown on immigrants crossing the border illegally has now spread to the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, Defense and Health and Human Services.

The Warren Way: College Admissions Scandal Mastermind Advised Students To Lie About Race

To say that race is a fraught issue for the American system of higher education doesn't quite capture the divisiveness that affirmative action has fostered over the years. Just look at the DoJ-backed lawsuits against Harvard and a handful of other elite colleges suspected of discrimination against Asian applicants.

The College Board touched on these sensitivities when it inadvertently sparked a vicious backlash over its 'adversity scores'. These attempts to quantify whether a student came from a 'privileged' or 'oppressed' background would be shared with colleges, but not the applicants.

GIven the controversies of the past week, a WSJ report on how college admissions scandal mastermind Rick Singer, the consultant charged with earning millions for bribing coaches and helping students cheat on the SATs in what the FBI called "Operation Varsity Blues", advised many of his clients to misrepresent their race couldn't have been better timed.

Apparently, it's difficult for the admissions committees to pick up on this type of deception.

One of WSJ's anonymous sources with insider knowledge of Singer's operations said that 'Native American' was a popular option, since most families could credibly claim an affiliation stretching back generations that may or may not be accurate, and it was impossible to tell if a white student was actually mixed-race just by looking at him or her. One student checked the 'Native American' box even though "there was absolutely nothing Native American about this kid."

Another family charged in the scandal listed their son as "Black/Hispanic" despite having no evidence to support either claim. One source told WSJ that Singer would argue that choosing not to misrepresent their child's race would risk putting them at a serious "competitive disadvantage."

A son of Marjorie Klapper, a parent scheduled to plead guilty Friday for participating in the scheme, was incorrectly listed on his Common Application as being black and Hispanic, the people said. William “Rick” Singer, the college counselor who has agreed to plead guilty in the case and is awaiting sentencing, also arranged for a proctor to cheat on the ACT admissions test for the teen, according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit filed in the case.

Ms. Klapper, who lives in Menlo Park, Calif., was one of many parents charged whose child was misrepresented as a minority, according to one of the people, who is familiar with the investigation.

Mr. Singer frequently gave families the option of misrepresenting race and would say that not doing so could put their child at a "competitive disadvantage," said one of the people, who is familiar with his business.

None of the parents, nor Singer, are facing charges related to misrepresenting an applicant's race. But the fact that this symbol for corruption in the higher education system so easily exploited the same 'loophole' that got Elizabeth Warren into Harvard - and would even preach about the risks of not doing it - should tell us all we need to know about this new push to gauge every child's "adversity."

Trump as Folk Hero

How has Trump maintained his base through all the adversity of the last three years? Surprisingly, the explanation is simple. His critics haven’t talked to the people, but instead, have talked to each other. These experts still don’t know how America got here, but the people do.

It is rarely noted that Trump’s popularity hardly moves with the issues of the day. Why is that? Simply stated, there is now a personal bond. The base shared Trump’s foxhole, and he led them to victory. The gratitude that Trump has earned cannot be erased by slurs against his person. And further, the insults that he endures are seen as the same ones that have been used to control the public for decades. What the critics -– the unaccomplished, self-righteous assailants – lack is a reason to align with the American masses. Their malignant words are a badge of honor, elevating Trump even further.

Now, the establishment cannot understand the comradeship that Trump has with his fellow warriors. He has a special appeal. Trump has found the sweet spot. His appeal is a mystery to his adversaries, but not to his base. The leftists face an oxymoronic situation now. Their criticism further cements the bond to Trump, and the lack of criticism gives him an unobstructed field. They cannot win.

The deplorables were here in 2016, and will be here in 2020. President Trump is not just any hero; he is a genuine folk hero.
