>the auto refresh box unchecks itself

My speculation is that feature was implemented by CodeMonkey quite a few months ago around the time they were combatting regular DDoS attacks on 8ch … it would relieve load on the 8ch servers by not automatically continuing to fetch updates towards the end of a thread … the feature doesn't bother me once you get used to it … can you imagine how many browsers are sitting there with a tab open to a full bread, and they were continually requesting updates from the server when no update was available b/c thread was full? Software engineer says it was a good idea, possibly makes servers significantly quicker to serve up fresh data.

A lot of people still value personal consumption and immediate gratification over long-term security.

Example: a hispanic lady I know who's always been at or near poverty, needing handouts from friends (us), but somehow had enough money to get a tattoo and get her nails done.

Americans need education on basic financial concepts and priorities. Logical thinking, extrapolating from the present to the future, concept of independence rather than dependence on handouts.
