You have not a clue what it's like to be dirt poor. Let alone everyone around you indulging in all kinds of small / medium / large luxuries. You're living in that bootstrap myth.
Reminds me of a post I read on another site where parent was upset when they and child decided to give a homeless person they were aware of a couple of bags of groceries. The guy picked out some stuff from the bags, left the rest. In that post, it never occurred to them, they decribed the guy had a bike, also would have had no place to put this food.
Also, just FYI, many homeless are afraid to take from strangers, afraid they'll be poisoned. Homeless get "disappeared" regularly.
