It appears to have been a steel-framed building, i.e. with wide not-very-solid gaps between the framing members. The "bricks" appear to be cardboard shipping boxes that were stacked on shelves in the warehouse.
The photos and story are peculiar, agree. I'm not ruling out that it really did happen as reported, but seems quite strange.
