The south seceded from the union.
It would be like if Calif. or Texas or any other state declared that it would no longer be a part of the United States and decided to be their own country.
The south had their own president, their own money, their own laws, etc.
Lincoln decided he wasn't going to let them be their own country.
The Civil war was to preserve the Union.
