Too soon, IMO. Unless they have a theory of space power, separate from air power, they aren't ready. A new space power theory would point to entirely new functions/activities that aren't contained within the current air power paradigm. They need these new functions as a basis around which to organize new missions, and for which they could design and procure new forces. That's how the airpower advocates in the interwar years made their arguments; they didn't say "air is different;" they argued for entirely new missions that weren't contained within the Army's paradigm of warfare. IOW, new warfighting value added.
Someone some time ago said "all they do is move information around and take pictures." Kinda crude, but accurate. Not enough to warrant a separate service, or even a separate "corps" within the Air Force as the Marines are to the Navy.
All the articles I've read (admittedly, few) in favor of a separate space force drone on and on about how "space is different" and "it's time" for a separate service. None of these articles mention how all this would improve warfighting; in fact, I haven't seen that word used. The whining about "it's time" and "space is different" is simply Progressive, victim identity politics, which is a crappy reason for military organization. But that kinda crap logic resonates in DC nowadays.
I read one notion that a separate space force would finally obtain all the funding they think they deserve. I don't see how that will happen, since the DOD budget is a zero-sum game. If Space System A is that important, it can be prioritized within the current budgeting system.
Finally, all these ideas about a separate space force only involve the Air Force piece of space, and not those of the other Services. This tells me this is an identity insecurity issue within Air Force Space Command, who feel the rest of the Air Force doesn't love them enough. If it were to be a truly transformational reorganization, it would address all the space capabilities across all the Services. None of the proposals I've seen address this.
