Much of our machinery for factories comes from Europe and Japan. The economic system as been structured to keep countries as codependent on each other as possible. This prevents one from bucking the global order and going off on its own, as the several dozen little things they need from another country are completely absent from their in-house manufacturing/agricultural/etc capacity.
Even if the final outcome is what you say, we need time to rebuild key industry before we will be able to break out from under the globalist economy. This is why steel is important, among other things. Aluminum, silicon die fabs, all the things we need if we don't want to be trying to minecraft this shit while China can go Command&Conquer.
