Ken Hamm of Answers in Genesis has a book, Already Gone, that probably explains why. Instead of relationships and stories in Sunday School they should have gotten apologetics. Because what they learned from all their years in Sunday School is that Christianity doesn't have answers, which couldn't be further from the truth but no one took the time to give them the answers.
Proverbs aren't legal promises they are the typical outcome of wise versus foolish behaviour. But that said, do continue to pray, God cares about you and therefore he cares about your children too because they matter to you. God's Word has much to say about the rewards of persistent prayer.
