The energy is absorbed by the earth. That is the extra heat that is causing the magma under the earths plate tectonics to become less viscus or less sticky. Personally I stand on my head and read them that way but it is all personal preference. Whatever you think you see you much then find and back up with a couple of sources or it is just a guess.
