all those things sound very nice and neat to do, which tells me you've never actually done them.
the "tape would advance" for example:
there is no tape
saying we can define a "tape" what is "advancing"?
what does advancing mean? how does it happen? are bits changed? what bits are changed? where are these bits anyway?
