UN maritime convention can’t be applied to Kerch Strait incident with Ukraine – Moscow

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea is urging Russia to hand over Ukrainian ships and crew detained for “border violation” off Crimea in 2018. Moscow has hit back, saying the body has no jurisdiction here.

Delivering its take on the matter, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that UN rules can’t be invoked in this case, again lamenting “irresponsible” behavior of Ukrainian sailors during the incident almost a year ago.

Moscow’s statement came right after the maritime court ruled that Russia must release the Ukrainian sailors and return the seized warships before the sides can present further argument to the court. Russia skipped the hearing (which took place in Hamburg, Germany).

Kiev is suing Moscow over the standoff in the Kerch Strait, which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Azov, near Crimea. On November 25, the Russian Coast Guard captured two Ukrainian gunboats and a tugboat which it says violated its maritime borders.

The Biggest American Companies Now Owned by the Chinese

March 18, 2016

On Friday, Starwood Hotels agreed to be acquired by Anbang, a Chinese insurance company that is rapidly buying up U.S. hotels, for over $13 billion. Marriott, which had previously made a deal to buy Starwood, is reportedly considering a counter bid. But it’s unlikely that Marriott will be able win a bidding war with the Chinese insurer, which was originally bankrolled by state-owned enterprises and has a war chest of cash filled up by Chinese investors eager for returns.

If it goes through, the Starwood (hot) deal would be the largest acquisition ever of a U.S. company by a Chinese firm. Recently, Chinese firms have been on a buying spree. This year, Chinese firms have spent $103 billion on acquisitions of foreign firms, not just in the U.S. That’s nearly as much in two and a half months as the $107 billion that Chinese firms spent on foreign purchases in all of last year, which itself was a record.

Here are the biggest U.S. firms to be swallowed, or are soon to be swallowed, by a Chinese company, according to Dealogic.

This job is not easy, for he’s battling the left and their absurd words of destruction. I’ve said this once and I’ll say this again, that our nation has been built on the solid ground from our forefathers and there is a moral code of duty that has been passed on from President Lincoln. And a train that's passin' my way helps the rhythm move along.

There is no doubt about the words are clear,

The voice is strong, is oh so strong.

I'm just a simple guy, I live from day to day.

A ray of sunshine melts my frown and blows my blues away,

There's nothing more that I can say but on a day like today

I pass the time away and walk a quiet mile with you.

Danish party presents plan for full asylum stop until 2025

Denmark’s largest right-wing party, the Danish People’s Party (DF) has presented a plan to introduce a complete halt to asylum until 2025.

According to them, a five-year full asylum stop until 2025 will reduce the influx by 4,000 migrants annually, while saving the state’s coffers up to $300 million.

If the DF had its way, asylum seekers coming to Denmark via Germany and Sweden would be rejected and asked to apply in the countries they have just travelled through, which are perfectly safe. If they still choose to stay in Denmark, a deportation will be negotiated for payment.

“We don’t want people to seek asylum directly in Denmark in the coming years. This means that if you come to the Danish border from a peaceful country, typically Germany, then you’ll be told to seek asylum in Germany”, Danish People’s Party’s chairman Kristian Thulesen Dahl explained to Danish Radio.

According to him, the Refugee Convention doesn’t prevent Denmark from sending people to countries that are deemed safe. Therefore, Denmark will use the border controls to turn asylum seekers back and ask them to stay, say, in Germany.

“The question is, how many people will want to apply in Denmark if they know that we have a system where they will be sent back anyway”, Thulesen Dahl explained.

According to Thulesen Dahl, this plan violates neither the Schengen Agreement nor the Dublin Regulation. He ventured that the Dublin system, according to which the first country an asylum seeker enters is usually responsible for dealing with their case, has “broken down” in recent years anyway.

The Danish People’s Party estimates that an asylum stop will result in 4,000 fewer asylum seekers coming to Denmark every year, while putting an extra DKK 2 billion ($300 million) more into the state’s coffers.

Vicious Cycle: Pentagon Buys Services From Tech Giants It Created

Dwight D. Eisenhower warned America about the danger posed by the military-industrial complex but in the same light, he also of a technological elite. It is now more apparent than ever that two forces have merged into a single column. ⁃ TN Editor

The US Department of Defense’s bloated budget, along with CIA venture capital, helped to create tech giants, including Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and PayPal. The government then contracts those companies to help its military and intelligence operations. In doing so, it makes the tech giants even bigger.

In recent years, the traditional banking, energy and industrial Fortune 500companies have been losing ground to tech giants like Apple and Facebook. But the technology on which they rely emerged from the taxpayer-funded research and development of bygone decades. The internet started as ARPANET, an invention of Honeywell-Raytheon working under a Department of Defense (DoD) contract. The same satellites that enable modern internet communications also enable US jets to bomb their enemies, as does the GPS that enables online retailers to deliver products with pinpoint accuracy. Apple’s touchscreen technology originated as a US Air Force tool. The same drones that record breath-taking video are modified versions of Reapers and Predators.

Tax-funded DoD research is the backbone of the modern, hi-tech economy. But these technologies are dual-use. The companies that many of us take for granted–including Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and PayPal–are connected indirectly and sometimes very directly to the US military-intelligence complex.

What An Act Of God Means To A Home Insurance Company

Home insurance is one of the most essential pieces of protection that any owner can have for their house. In the event of a fire, theft, or vandalism, home insurance can help defray what might otherwise be an insurmountable cost. The right homeowner insurance companies can bring peace of mind to a homeowner by providing excellent service and reliability, coupled with a track record for payment and satisfaction. What a homeowner needs to be aware of, however, is that every home insurance policy carries with it certain limitations on what will be paid out. Even the most comprehensive of policies will have limits, often defined as “Acts of God.”

To a home insurance company, an Act of God is something that no amount of care could have predicted or prevented. A poorly maintained electrical system could cause a fire, and could also be repaired in such a way that a fire would be almost impossible. This type of peril, as it is often known to insurers, can be predicted and corrected for. If a fire were to occur, the homeowner would be covered for part or all of their damages, because it was a predictable risk. An Act of God falls outside of this category.

A flood is an excellent example of this. Except in states with specific flood insurance coverage, floods are generally regarded as Acts of God because they are both extremely unlikely and are not preventable. As far as the insurance company is concerned, a flood is not factored into the risk when a house is assessed, and they are under no obligation to pay out for an event that no one could have predicted, especially as the cost to repair or replace large numbers of houses could bankrupt the company. So far, US insurance law supports this policy, allowing homeowner insurance companies to deny coverage for acts that are beyond human control. However, as more and more natural disasters are being revealed as having some type of human origin, this policy is being called into question. For the moment, however, any homeowner looking to add coverage to their property that will cover any Act of God will also be paying substantially higher homeowner insurance rates, and may even have to seek a separate, specialized insurance company.

EXCLUSIVE: Rumors Swirling that Fired Italian Spies Were Connected in Plot to Eliminate Trump

Rumors are swirling that the recent firings of top Italian spies were related to Obama and a plot to set up candidate and President Trump in a Hillary email scandal.

And now another Internet Sleuth has uncovered some shocking news related to the recent removal of these top Italian intelligence ministers from their positions as top spies in the government.

The story begins in January 2017 when Computer World wrote about alleged crimes committed by Italian Giulio Occhionero:

44 Things You Should Know About The Green New Deal

On Feb. 7, US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and US Sen. Ed Markey introduced legislation known as the Green New Deal.

You’ve probably heard of it. It’s a big deal, to paraphrase Joe Biden.

The History of New Deals

Wikipedia, the Internet’s fountain of knowledge, describes the legislation as “a proposed stimulus package that aims to address climate change and economic inequality.”

Okay. But what is that?

If the term “new deal” sounds familiar, it should. It’s a reference to FDR’s New Deal, which was itself a play off of Teddy Roosevelt’s Square Deal. (Politicians don’t win extra points for originality.)

So just imagine FDR’s New Deal took the Paris Climate Agreement out for drinks, one thing led to another, and—voila—nine months later they had a baby: The Green New Deal.

So what should we make of this Green New Deal? Since climate change is bad, and inequality is bad, can we assume the Green New Deal is good?

Have an Informed Opinion

Well, that’s for you to decide. But here are 44 facts and reflections on the GND to consider:

  1. The GND is necessary, we’re told, because global warming will cause “more than $500,000,000,000 in lost annual economic output in the United States by the year 2100.”

  1. That’s a scary number. But even if we accept such a figure, it’s important to note, as Tim Worstall has, that we’re talking about .05 percent of the total US economy in 2100.

  1. That $500 billion price tag, in context, is rather small, then—at least compared to what AOC’s legislation would cost. Some estimates put the price tag at $93 trillion.

  1. Relax, relax. Fact-checking organizations are probably right when they say that these figures are mostly pulled out of a, ahem, hat (much like AOC’s own $500 billion figure).

Texas migrant flights brought flu outbreak to San Diego shelter: county officials

San Diego’s migrant shelter is experiencing a flu outbreak after receiving asylum-seeking families who were flown to local Border Patrol stations from Texas for processing, county officials said.

The shelter’s medical team confirmed three cases of influenza on Monday, according to Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county’s deputy public health officer. In a shelter setting, as in long-term care or nursing facilities, Sindelinger said, an outbreak is when at least two cases appear within 72 hours.

“I want to stress we are taking all appropriate steps that we can to contain this outbreak at this facility and to protect the public’s health in San Diego,” said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

The San Diego Rapid Response Network shelter opened after Immigration and Customs Enforcement ended a program that helped migrant families connect with loved ones in the U.S. before being released. The collective of nonprofits, funded by the state, now does the work of making calls to those who have offered to sponsor arriving asylum seekers to get bus or plane tickets for the migrants to move on to their final destinations elsewhere in the U.S.

To date, it has helped more than 14,000 people, according to the network.

WALL STREET AND THE BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION

Dear Mr. President:I am in sympathy with the Soviet form of government as that best suited for the Russian people…Letter to President Woodrow Wilson (October 17, 1918) from William Lawrence Saunders, chairman, Ingersoll-Rand Corp.; director, American International Corp.; and deputy chairman, Federal Reserve Bank of New YorkThe frontispiece in this book was drawn by cartoonist Robert Minor in 1911 for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Minor was a talented artist and writer who doubled as a Bolshevik revolutionary, got himself arrested in Russia in 1915 for alleged subversion, and was later bank-rolled by prominent Wall Street financiers. Minor's cartoon portrays a bearded, beaming Karl Marx standing in Wall Street with Socialism tucked under his arm and accepting the congratulations of financial luminaries J.P. Morgan, Morgan partner George W. Perkins, a smug John D. Rockefeller, John D. Ryan of National City Bank, and Teddy Roosevelt — prominently identified by his famous teeth — in the background. Wall Street is decorated by Red flags. The cheering crowd and the airborne hats suggest that Karl Marx must have been a fairly popular sort of fellow in the New York financial district. Was Robert Minor dreaming? On the contrary, we shall see that Minor was on firm ground in depicting an enthusiastic alliance of Wall Street and Marxist socialism. The characters in Minor's cartoon — Karl Marx (symbolizing the future revolutionaries Lenin and Trotsky), J. P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller — and indeed Robert Minor himself, are also prominent characters in this book. The contradictions suggested by Minor's cartoon have been brushed under the rug of history because they do not fit the accepted conceptual spectrum of political left and political right. Bolsheviks are at the left end of the political spectrum and Wall Street financiers are at the right end; therefore, we implicitly reason, the two groups have nothing in common and any alliance between the two is absurd. Factors contrary to this neat conceptual arrangement are usually rejected as bizarre observations or unfortunate errors. Modern history possesses such a built-in duality and certainly if too many uncomfortable facts have been rejected and brushed under the rug, it is an inaccurate history. On the other hand, it may be observed that both the extreme right and the extreme left of the conventional political spectrum are absolutely collectivist. The national socialist (for example, the fascist) and the international socialist (for example, the Communist) both recommend totalitarian politico-economic systems based on naked, unfettered political power and individual coercion. Both systems require monopoly control of society. While monopoly

Report: Half a Billion Christians Facing Global Persecution

More than 60 percent of the world’s population of more than 7.5 billion reside in countries where the right to religious freedom is obstructed or denied. An estimated 505 million Christians face persecution for following their faith, a Catholic NGO Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) report indicated this week.

“For simply belonging to the wrong religion, countless numbers of people have been killed; many others have disappeared and still more have been imprisoned indefinitely,” John Pontifex, the report’s editor-in-chief, said.

On Thursday, a press release on the 14th edition of ACN’s Religious Freedom in the World Report, which this year covers all religions in 196 countries over a two-year period up to and including June 2018, declared:
