By the end of 1949 Chiang, two million Kuomintang refugees and China’s gold reserve had all crossed the 100 miles of the Formosa Strait and were holed up on the large island of Taiwan. Still claiming to be the legitimate government of China, Chiang vowed that he and his still substantial army would one day soon return to reclaim the mainland by force for the Republic of China. The US administration realistically saw that Chiang had no hope of doing this and believed that the fall of Taiwan was imminent. Consequently on the second last day of 1949, National Security Council resolution 48/2 was signed, ruling out American commitment to defend Taiwan and signalling an end to any further US involvement in the civil war. Taiwan was decreed expendable.

The Communist leadership, headed by Zhou Enlai, Mao Zedong, and others, also shared a similar sentiment. It cared little about Japanese advances, as each Japanese victory weakened the Nationalist forces a little bit further, thus giving the Communists a bit more breathing room. At this time, the Communists, which was viewed no more than a bandit force, were contained in a desolate region in China, staying alive only because the Soviet Union (USSR), which held Chaing Kaishek's son a virtual hostage in the Russian capital of Moscow, had the influence to stop Chiang from launching any decisive offensives.

Reiwa – Japan’s new imperial era – adheres to the established naming custom in that it comprises two kanji characters – rei and wa – and is easy to read and write.

But it also represents a break with centuries of tradition as the first era name to have been inspired by a Japanese, rather than Chinese, work of classical literature.

The characters are taken from a stanza in a poem about plum blossoms that appears in Man’yoshu, the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, compiled sometime after 759.

Reiwa: Japan prepares to enter new era of 'fortunate harmony'

Placed in that literary context, the kanji can be read to mean “fortunate” or “auspicious”, and “peace” or “harmony”.

Another development contributed to the fifth campaign's success. This was a change in political control in the Soviet. Control was taken away from Mao Zedong. There was a group of Communists who had been sent to study in Moscow. Upon their return to China about the time of the 1927 massacre of Communists in Shanghai they journeyed to the Jiangxi area. They were known as the Bolsheviks and they were disdainful of Mao's ideology which was not consistent with Marxism. At that time a Comintern agent, Otto Braun, made his way to the south China Soviet. He was only suppose to be a military advisor, but because he controlled the matter of aid to the movement from the Soviet Union he was given high status and a role in the decision-making of the Soviet. The decisions were to be made by a committee of three that consisted of Otto Braun, Zhou Enali and Bo Gu. Mao, who was suffering from a bout of malaria at the time, was left out of the decision-making process for the Soviet he had created.

Viziv's vision statement, rendered in all-caps on its website, is to "POWER THE PLANET AND BRING LIGHT TO THE WORLD," indicating that its primary goal is indeed power-related, offering up electricity without traditional infrastructure, as part of a partnership with Baylor University. If it's anything like Tesla's system, it could also offer new ways to send signals for radio communications and global positioning systems. And it could bring electricity to the 1.3 billion people worldwide who don't have it and don't have the infrastructure to get it.
