I think it was a white hat sting on Comey and McCabe.
Somehow we got wind of the plot, flipped those Italians (or fed them bad intelligence), and then watched them plant it with the FBI.
The trap was sprung as soon as they raided the servers.
Because there was nothing on them.
That is why Comey was fired that exact day, probably minutes after the raid.
He would have then realized he had been setup.
