European elections 2019 results: Brexit Party expected to win most UK seats

Official exit polls are revealing a tough night for establishment parties across the continent amidst a surge of both populist and liberal support, with voter turnout at a 25 year high on 51 per cent.

The two major establishment blocs in the European Parliament - the centre-Right European Peoples' Party (EPP) and centre-Left Socialists & Democrats (S&D) - are on course to lose some 79 seats between them.

The EPP are predicted to finishing the night with just 177 seats, down from 217, while the S&D are on 147, down from 186.

In France, Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party are predicted to take top spot with 23.7 per cent of the vote, against Macron's centrist grouping on 22.5 per cent according to polls.

In Germany, Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union and the centre-left Social Democratic Union could be on course for their worst ever result at European elections, while the Green Party look like the biggest winners grabbing second spot.

The German CDU are polling just 28.6 per cent of the vote, down from 38 per cent in 2014 - a result which would be a significant blow to Mrs Merkel.
