Information I have is that it was a swine flu. My great grandmother had Spanish flu in 1918 and she was really sick. The pneumonia that kicked in afterwards is what usually took people out. Young adults were hit hardest. I'm guessing strong immune response made it much worse.
This is very important. We would be at a stalemate if this didn't happen.
