there's 40s on either side of the 50. You can pick up yards from going to 50 to 40. Also as you stated, possible to go the other way. But with declass and all the goodness since, I imagine we moved in the positive direction.
In all the years I've wasted away in front of a screen watching sports ball, I've never heard anyone at anytime refer to a positive gain from 50 to 40 as being on the -/negative/minus 40 yard line. If specification is required, the term is "their 40" as opposed to "our 40."
