Drag Queen story hour coming to Fall River, MA Library and now a group is planning to protest

The Massachusetts Family Institute, a Woburn-based nonprofit with a mission of strengthening Christian values, opposes the event and hopes to fill the room to capacity before story time begins at 11 a.m.

Institute President Andrew Beckwith said the event is “degrading to women” as it presents men wearing “hyper-sexualized” clothing and “garish makeup.”

He said the event would be destructive to children and that it is “irresponsible” to expose them to drag, which is generally reserved for adults.

“It’s kind of disturbing,” Beckwith said. “We believe the public library should be accountable to the families they serve.”

Verville said she was “very surprised” with the contention, which included a Tweet from former Boston Red Sox player Curt Schilling that targeted the character of drag queen Naomi Chomsky, who will read at the library.

Chomsky will read two books, “Julian is a Mermaid,” by Jessica Love, about a boy inspired by exuberantly dressed women he sees on his way home one day, and “Red: A Crayon’s Story” by Michael Hall, about being true to your inner self, whether you’re a red crayon or a blue crayon.
