they are not making 'points' they are providing conjecture. They must present it with plausible deniability. It's part of the 'being a good mentor by not forcefeeding your ideas on your students' unspoken code of 'good mentoring' and 'sharing conjecture that some will see as toxic'.
That is the 'think for yourself' way of doing it.
you don't agree. but if I put a question mark then I'm not 'telling you what you think'. but expressing a conjecture out of resepct for the idea that I don't know what you think to the level of being able to speak for you.
so I say instead 'you don't agree?'
with a question mark and give you the respect you deserve.
