Emergency declared in Russian city of Dzerzhinsk after explosions at TNT plant (VIDEOS)

Officials in the central Russian city of Dzerzhinsk have declared an emergency after a series of blasts rocked an explosives factory. At least 38 people have been injured, four seriously, and two remain missing.

The explosions at a TNT production plant have sent massive plumes of smoke over the city. A first explosion soon triggered two other blasts at the same facility at 11:45am Moscow time on Saturday, before spreading to another building nearby.

More than 300 people and 50 technical units were involved in the response to the blast, according to the emergency ministry chief for the Nizhny Novgorod region. A criminal inquiry has been launched into the explosions, on suspicion of a breach of industrial safety rules.

Locals shared several videos from the region showing a huge mushroom of smoke rising into the sky.

US government preparing to launch antitrust probe into Google – reports

Google risks falling under scrutiny again as the US Department of Justice (DOJ) gears up to investigate the IT giant after studying its ads and search policies, new reports say.

The DOJ is considering launching an antitrust investigation into Google, the Wall Street Journal wrote on Friday, citing sources. The story was quickly confirmed by several other media outlets.

The agency had reportedly decided to gear up against the Silicon Valley-based company after receiving several complaints, referred to it by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). It is unclear what stage the government’s move is at, as some sources said the DOJ was making “early steps” in launching the probe, while others told reporters that it was “exploring” whether to do it.

The focus of the possible investigation was also not specified. However, it was mentioned that the government taskforce had been examining Google’s advertising and search practices. The company and the DOJ declined to comment on the issue.

The news feeds into growing concerns that tech giants like Google have become too influential on the global market. In March, the European Commission slapped the company with a €1.5 billion fine ($1.7 billion) for “abusive practices in online advertising.”

Police Officers in Hospital After Riot in Migrant Hostel in Germany - Reports

Police were summoned to an asylum shelter in a Bavarian village when its inmates started a violent brawl. However, they could not calm the troublemakers down and were attacked by migrants. Only reinforcement could tackle the uprising.

Six Nigerians, aged from 23 to 38, were arrested following a riot in an asylum shelter, located in a small Bavarian municipality Stephansposching, German outlet Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports. An investigation has been launched after five policemen were injured; four of them taken to a hospital with slash wounds and eye injuries.

On Friday, they were summoned to the facility when its residents started to wreak havoc. According to the outlet, 30 angry refugees insulted and harassed the officials. The situation escalated when the police pulled the alleged ringleader out of the mob. Several asylum seekers attacked the officers and threw bicycles at them; the police responded with pepper spray.

Large Russian airlifters arrive in Syria, likely transporting heavy weapons

BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:40 P.M.) – The Russian Air Force reportedly delivered a new supply of weapons to Syria this evening after two of their airlifters were tracked arriving in southwestern Latakia.

According to the website Flight Tracker, two Antonov An-124 airlifters arrived at the Hmeimim Airbase in southwestern Latakia this evening.

The An-124 is the largest airlifter to ever travel to Syria, which indicates they are likely transporting some heavy weapons to the Syrian military.

This move by the Russian Air Force comes just weeks after the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a large-scale offensive inside the Hama Governorate’s northwestern countryside.

In the past, the Russian Air Force has increased its transport flights to Syria during the SAA’s offensives. So there is a strong indication that the Russian military is transporting more weapons to the countryr.

ISIS bride helping CIA track down Baghdadi: report

The most senior female Daesh prisoner has played a significant role in the CIA’s manhunt for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, it has been revealed by the Guardian.

The Daesh woman, Nisrine Assad Ibrahim, better known by her doom-inducing nom de guerre, Umm Sayyaf, has reportedly helped in joint CIA-Kurdish efforts to track down Mr Baghdadi by providing detailed accounts of his movements over the years, including the locations of safe houses as well as the obscure traveling routes that he takes.

Miss Sayyaf, 29-years-old, and believed to be Iraqi, was captured in a 2015 US Delta Force raid in Syria, in which her husband, Daesh’s then-second in command and the group’s so-called oil minister, Abu Sayyaf, was killed.

Since being detained, Miss Sayyaf has reportedly spent many hours helping American investigators use maps to determine where Baghdadi may be bogged down.

US begins efforts to implement safe zone in northern Syria

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 P.M.) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that the U.S. has begun the process of implementing a safe zone in northern Syria.

During his joint press conference with German Heiko Maas, Pompeo stated that the U.S. government will continue to work to implement the U.N. initiatives on Syria, while also working with their partners on the ground to implement a safe zone.

“You’ve seen the work that we have done with the Turks in Manbij the west of the Euphrates River,” Pompeo said referring to the joint patrols by the U.S. and Turkish troops in the area.

“And we are attempting to set up a system something that can add to that. Call it a buffer zone, call it what you will…That will reduce the risk of terrorists attacking from Syria into Turkey,” he said.

Pompeo’s reference to ‘terrorists’ is quite interesting because Turkey views its allies as the terrorists inside of Syria.

It is still not clear whether or not Turkey will be willing to work with the U.S. on this safe zone because their armed forces are preparing for an operation against the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria.

Newly disclosed emails reveal American Psychological Association coordinated with officials in CIA and White House to help ethically justify detainee program

The leading American professional group for psychologists secretly worked with the Bush administration to help justify the post-9/11 US detainee torture program, according to a watchdog analysis released on Thursday.

The report, written by six leading health professionals and human rights activists, is the first to examine the alleged complicity of the American Psychological Association (APA) in the “enhanced interrogation” program.

Based on an analysis of more than 600 newly disclosed emails, the report found that the APA coordinated with Bush-era government officials – namely in the CIA, White House and Department of Defense – to help ethically justify the interrogation policy in 2004 and 2005, when the program came under increased scrutiny for prisoner abuse by US military personnel at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

British billionaire Philip Green charged in US with spanking Pilates teacher Katie Surridge

British retail tycoon Philip Green has been charged with four counts of misdemeanour assault in the US after an Arizona Pilates instructor accused him of repeatedly touching her inappropriately, Britain’s Press Association reported on Friday.

The billionaire chairman of Arcadia Group, Green, 67, is accused of spanking the instructor and grabbing her buttocks at the Canyon Ranch resort in Tucson in 2016 and 2018, according to the Pima County Attorney’s Office, the PA reported.

Arcadia Group said in a statement on Green’s behalf that he “strenuously denies” the allegations, and noted that “contrary to previous suggestions in the media, there is no allegation of any sexual assault or misconduct made by the prosecution”.
