As I drove down a long stretch of highway in Indian country I saw a man standing in tall grass at the side of the road. He waited till I looked at him, and then he quickly looked away, grabbed his chest as if something bad was happening and collapsed into the thickets.

I concluded that it was a rouse.

I said 'people don't stand out here at noon in the middle of the dessert in July. Plus I knew that the local indians have a thing where they never look someone in the eye.

Was I wrong for driving on?

Did the man really have a heart attack just like that?

Was it my responsibility to care for a man who was in an odd place who was a stranger, and I was just a tourist passing through?
