Queen to offer teetotal Trump red, white, and dessert wine, champagne, and port
The centerpiece of President Trump's state visit to the United Kingdom will be a Monday night Buckingham Palace banquet in which he will be treated to the very best of British etiquette - and offered a lot of alcohol. Guests will eat with silver gilt cutlery from the famed Grand Service, which was commissioned by George IV in 1806. It was made from gilt that today would be worth more than $5 million and comprises more than 4,000 items, including ice buckets. That level of intricacy does not come easily. It takes royal staff three days to set the U-shaped table. Each place setting requires six glasses - running from water, white wine and red wine all the way through to champagne, dessert wine and port. Trump, whose brother Fred Jr. was an alcoholic who died at age 43 in 1981, is a lifelong teetotaler who has said he has never even tasted a beer. U.S. and British officials described the banquet as the highlight of President Trump's three-day state visit.
While differences over everything from Huawei to Iran, not to mention Trump's dabbling in British politics in the run-up to his arrival, could threaten harmony during his meetings with Theresa May - who has her own problems with Brexit and her imminent departure - both sides have played up the pomp and circumstance that comes with a formal state visit.
Staff use a wooden ruler to ensure each diner is exactly 18 inches from the next. Each of the chairs is set exactly the same distance from the table. And the napkins are folded into the shape of a Dutch bonnet.
The menu is selected by the Queen herself, who picks from three versions offered by her chefs. Guests will enter in procession led by the Lord Chamberlain — the official in charge of the royal household — followed by the Queen and Mr Trump.
They are both expected to make speeches. However the 170-strong guest list has made headlines for the names that won’t be attending rather than those who will be present. Jeremy Corbyn, the hard left leader of the Labour Party, is boycotting the event along with Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London who has clashed repeatedly with Trump and on Sunday said the U.K. should not be rolling out the red carpet for a state visit.
