Discrepancy In Slotkin’s Resumes On Israeli-Palestinian Work

Entries show work for both Palestinian and Israeli groups during Second Intifada

Two resumes from Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D., Mich.) offer different accounts of an early point in her career, raising questions about which version is most accurate and if there are political reasons why the two CVs do not match exactly. The discrepancy is also drawing some criticism from pro-Israel quarters.

When the Michigan Democrat was being considered for assistant secretary of state in 2012, a resume she submitted as part of her application claimed that circa 2000-2001 she had served as a grant writer for the Follow-Up Committee on Arab Education (FUCAE). That group's website says it "is a professional body representing the Palestinian minority in Israel in all matters related to education." However, her current work history on her LinkedIn profile for the same time period does not reference FUCAE, and instead says she worked as a grant writer for Isha L'Isha (Women to Women), which describes itself as "the oldest grassroots feminist organization in Israel and one of the leading voices of women's rights in the country." Slotkin is Jewish, and is among the crop of freshman in the house who helped Democrats gain a majority in the lower chamber last November. Her congressional office did not return requests for comment about the discrepancy.

Taken together, the resumes portray Slotkin as working both for a pro-Palestinian organization as well as an Israeli organization at a time marred by the emergence of the "Second Intifada," a wave of violence between Palestinians and Israelis. The LinkedIn profile gives little description into the work for Isha L'Isha.

In the 2012 resume, she listed her title with FUCAE as the director of development, adding: "Served as lead grant-writer and spokesperson for a Palestinian civil rights organization during the second intifada. Travelled regularly between Israel and the West Bank reporting on the civil rights status of Palestinians and Arab-Israelis, produced reports on conditions on the ground, briefed NGO, U.N. and international delegations on fast-changing events, and strategized with Israeli and Palestinian leaders and other non-profits on how to advocate more effectively for civil rights."

Rabbi Steve Burg, CEO for the pro-Israel group Aish HaTorah, said he finds Slotkin's work for FUCAE troubling, saying the group exposed themselves as anti-Israel just a handful of years later when the "High Follow-up Committee" published a manifesto.

"Included in the manifesto—the first ever produced by the community's supreme political body, known as the High Follow-Up Committee—are calls for Israel to be reformed from a Jewish state that privileges its Jewish majority into ‘a state of all its citizens' and for sweeping changes to a national system of land control designed to exclude Palestinian citizens from influence," said a report from Al-Ahram. "The document is likely to further increase tensions between the Israeli government and the country's Palestinian minority, and has already been roundly condemned in the Hebrew media," the report added.

Tunnel crossing between Lebanon and Israel went 22 storeys deep

ZARIT, Israel (Reuters) - The Israeli army on Monday showed the inside of a sophisticated tunnel passing deep underground from Lebanon into northern Israel, saying it was intended for use by Lebanese Hezbollah militants. The tunnel was rigged with electrical wiring, fuse boxes and communications equipment. An army spokesman said it began almost a kilometer (mile) away inside Lebanon and reached depths of some 80 meters (265 feet) - about the height of a 22-storey building - as it crossed into Israel, near the town of Zarit. It came to light earlier this year during an army operation in which a number of attack tunnels dug by Iran-backed Shi’ite Hezbollah were discovered and sealed off, the military said.

Hezbollah’s leader, in response to Israel’s tunnel operation, said in January that his group has been able to enter Israel for years. But he stopped short of acknowledging that the tunnels were the handiwork of Hezbollah, citing the heavily armed group’s policy of “ambiguity” on military matters and a desire to deny Israel a pretext to attack. Israel and Hezbollah last fought a war in 2006. While they have at times traded blows within Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, the Israel-Lebanon border has mostly been quiet.

Israel regards Iran as its biggest foe and Hezbollah as the main threat on its borders. It has waged an increasingly open campaign of military strikes against them both in Syria, where they have fought on the government side in the civil war.

Nokia says it has moved ahead of Huawei in 5G orders

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia has attracted increased interest in its next-generation telecoms equipment in recent weeks, helping it to move ahead of Chinese rival Huawei in total 5G orders, one of the Finnish company’s directors said. With 42 commercial 5G orders, Nokia has edged ahead of Huawei and Ericsson, Nokia director Federico Guillen said, as the companies jostle for position in a market in which U.S.-driven security concerns over Chinese equipment have boosted the attraction of Nordic vendors. Huawei has struck an estimated 40 commercial 5G orders. Swedish rival Ericsson has publicly announced 19 contracts, of which eight are live.

Customers are increasingly looking to Nokia to equip their next-generation core networks, either to have dual sourcing for the most sensitive parts of their networks or to replace existing providers, Guillen said. “It’s a little early to quantify that, but in recent weeks we are starting to see that happening,” Guillen, president of customer operations, told Reuters. Guillen said there has been particular interest from European countries that have been debating the role of Chinese vendors in their networks. “Where we are starting to see traction is in countries where there are debates,” Guillen said. Nokia said 22 of its 5G deals are with named customers such as T-Mobile, Telia and Softbank. It has won 12 new 5G orders since late March.
