Google Nest Users Couldnā€™t Unlock Doors, Use A/C, or Operate Baby Monitors During Platform Outage

Is a ā€œSmartā€ home really a happy home? Besides the increasing reports of privacy and cybersecurity risks and violations, when platform outages happen, everything connected to it stops working.

From FastCompany.com

Last night, Google reported several issues with its Cloud Platform, which made several Google sites slow or inoperable. Because of this, many of Googleā€™s sites and servicesā€“including Gmail, G Suite, and YouTubeā€“were slow or completely down for users in the U.S. and Europe.

However, the Google Cloud outage also affected third-party apps and services that use Google Cloud space for hosting. Affected third-party apps and services include Discord, Snapchat, and even Appleā€™s iCloud services.

But an especially annoying side effect of Google Cloudā€™s downtime was that Nest-branded smart home products for some users just failed to work. According to reports from Twitter, many people were unable to use their Nest thermostats, Nest smart locks, and Nest cameras during the downtime. This essentially meant that because of a cloud storage outage, people were prevented from getting inside their homes, using their AC, and monitoring their babies.

Of course, if you donā€™t mind using keys to open doors and manually turning on and off the air conditioner and baby monitors, you donā€™t need smart home technology.

Sanders Labels Politico Article About His Finances ā€˜Anti-Semiticā€™

Independent Vermont Sen. and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders labeled a Politico article digging into his finances ā€œanti-Semiticā€ during an interview over the weekend.

Sanders stated, ā€œCall that what it is. Itā€™s an anti-semitic article,ā€ in an interview with The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur.

Politicoā€™s article from last month, ā€œThe Secret of Bernieā€™s Millions,ā€ was an investigation into how the self-proclaimed democratic socialist amassed significant wealth and properties despite ā€œunrelentinglyā€ railing on the 1%.

ā€œThe whole article, itā€™s littered with innuendo about, like, ā€˜Oh yeah, he talks about millionaires and billionaires controlling government, but now heā€™s a millionaire,ā€™ā€ Uygur previously stated back when the story was published, according to Mediaite. ā€œItā€™s a one smear after another after another after another.ā€

Aside from the content of the article, some of the illustrations to go along with the article faced criticism. One of them showed Sanders, who is Jewish, looking off into the distance with a mansion over one shoulder and a tree with dollar bills as leaves. Another one shows him holding a house in his hands with two more houses appearing on each shoulder. The three houses represent his three properties.

Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez previously weighed in on the article questioning ā€œhow photoshopping money trees next to the only Jewish candidate for president and talking about how ā€˜cheapā€™ and rich he is isnā€™t antisemitic?ā€

Sanders speech writer David Sirota and chief of staff Ari Rabin-Havt also criticized Politicoā€™s article.
