"guard your heart for it determines the course of your heart" or "love others as you would love yourself or me"…Here is my take on self love, I spent most of my life in service to others, doing for others before myself, I attended to others needs before my own. God wants us to know how valuable we are to him, he gives us the vision of that love, we are meant to love ourselves in a way that is reflected through his eyes and what are worth is to him. In his sense we love ourselves because he and Jesus confirmed our worthiness through the the death an resurrection of Christ. From personal experience, I can tell you I was abused, taken advantage and not in a good place because I "misunderstood" what being of service to others actually meant. We can love ourselves and find meaning in our own actions and attribute it to our own value through our faith and belief in God. Even if you do not believe in God, you can still practice this philosophy. Most atheists I know are really decent human beings, they believe that what they do in this world counts even if they do not believe it will matter after their gone. One cannot go through life giving of themselves without some level of self-awareness and self-worth, I tried to do this blindly and I was actually harmed by my false pretense of being a servant to others….

This is just my view of course, take what you like and leave the rest.
