My dad was one of the pilots that flew the 101st into Normandy the night before D-Day. When they dropped down for their run they came down into heavy fog. They had to spread out to prevent collisions and couldn't see any landmarks either so that's why the troopers were so spread out. He and his squadron felt bad about that but they had no choice and did the best they could do under the circumstances. They lost planes that night. One of Dad's friends was Jewish. He went down and survived but was captured by the Waffen SS. They found out he was Jewish and killed him with their rifle butts.
