If your day was prior to 1980, I would tend to agree with you based on anecdotal info from others I've heard speak on the subject. Back then, the strain you purchased was identified by your bud-care provider as was it's country of origin i.e. Columbian Gold, or Maui Wowie, Panama Red etc.
After 1980, the Cartels jumped into the market flooding it with low grade brown poop grown by lazy corrupt Mexicans. It was henceforth identified as "Commercial" or "Chronic". It was not until the legalization movement started winning that the quality, taste and potency improved due to dedicated domestic growers.
Back in the day, Dad's favorite beer was Budweiser. Today I wouldn't drink that piss water if you held a gun to my head because I know of half a dozen locally crafted brews that blows the corporate swill out of the water.
The current strains available today make the hippie ganja of the 60's seem like smoking a length of hemp rope.
