The reason Merkel was there, I think. Potus speech very good and strong with praise of the traditional imagery of Free French, Brits and other allies fighting for nation state sovereignty. UK trip overall very good for POTUS's image, which hurts EU.
Even Pelosi was smart enough to bullshit her way past a got ya' quote by saying she doesn't criticize on foreign soil. POTUS Speech too good and inclusive to risk a PR stunt quote.
Macron and Merkel just double down, though. regardless.

I know people who left the eastern parts of Germany to get to the US sector by foot. They all got sick. People had to scavenge for food. There was a lot of sickness. The area around Berlin, for example, is flat with a high water table and with a lot of dead and improper burials it lead to sickness, according to one of the people I know.
Not weighing in on the camps, because I don't know one way or the other, but there was a lot of sickness overall because there was no transportation network to maintain food and medicine supplies. A lot of civilian people died.
